Im writing an essay for english, AGAIN, and have run out of ideas!!

"Examine how society affects human relationships in "town and country lovers"

the story is about a white guy who as a child has a black girl as a friend, later on they grow up to like each other, but cannot go out together because of society, and cannot be seen together in public. they make love and later on she gets married, and has a child, but the child isnt black.. the new black father still cares for the child and buys him gifts etc.

Thats about what happens..

I started writing about how blacks are discriminated, how they could not be together, that blacks and whites arent equal, but dont know what else to write

anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

It's kind of hard to give suggestions when we havn't read the book. The summary is pretty basic so basically what you've written is about as indepth of a suggestion as yo'ure gonna get.

Well, what could be some other ways society could affect human relationships?

I could probably find lots of examples in the book to back me up, but i just cant think of anything

Well i guess social standards and concepts of morality kind of go hand in hand but basically society decides what is right and what is not. There really isn't a fundamental concept of right and wrong. Had hitler won ww2, people living in europe would be convinced killing the jews was the rigth thing to do. in this case, i would say society is imposing the idea that interracial relationships are "wrong" and the characters are forced into that. As far as financial stratification goes, basically rich white people dont deal w/ poor black people. That seems to be the theme for alot of books and movies. Alteast the general idea.

<killjoy> You'll get more out of the class if you learn to find the ideas, themes and issues in a story on your own. This kind of analytical thinking will also help you on standardized tests, and in "real life" when you'll need to extract the important information from memos, product manuals, emails, and YAGTs. </killjoy>
