I need some ideas about NIC's and overclocking....

Hey everyone.

Though I don't often post in the Hardware forum but patrol it a lot, I thought I would take the opportunity to plum the knowledge of those out there with a problem/question.

I'm running an Iwill KK266-R with a 1.33ghz (@1.6ghz) and 256meg Crucial CAS2. Visiontek GeForce2 Ultra, Diamond MX400 and SMC 1211TX NIC round out the lot. I can get this processor stable at 1.6ghz (12x133 or 10x160)... but I lose any network ability (and therefore, Internet because of my DSL connection). Any FSB over 135 or so seems to tank my network connection.

Now what's weird to me is this exact NIC will run at 155mghz FSB (39mghz PCI bus) on my Asus CUSL2. I've got a pair of them, so I tried both cards... no go on either.

My brother is running a KK266 (non RAID) with a 1.2ghz at 1.42ghz (9.5x150) with the SAME network card. I really can't explain why this NIC in this system will not allow anything more than 133mghz FSB. All the other peripherals seem fine... and as I said, I have verified that both these NIC's that I have tried work on higher FSB's on other mainboards.

I did apply some thermal paste to the Northbridge of the mainboard, which my brother did not... could this be the cause of my problems? I mean, the PC cranks out 11,000+ 3dMark2000 3dMarks at higher FSB's... but there's no network ability.

Ideas?

Or any idea what sort of NIC I should switch to?

Thanks...

The only thing I can think of right now is that the default I/O voltage on the Asus boards are always set higher than 3.3V, I am not sure of the exact value but it is close to 3.5V I think. Maybe your NIC requires the extra juice, and your IWill is giving out 3.3V...

Well, bumping the voltage to max (+10% or 3.6) kept me in the same boat... still no NIC functionality at any FSB other than 133. Though 135 works as well...

I just do not understand this at all....
