ive got some basil, greek oregano, garlic chives, and mint outside and the basil is starting to get destroyed...so...what do i get to keep the bugs off that will keep the basil safe to eat with a rinse?

i had basil last year in a window box, but i got more and the other stuff so...i havent had to bother about bugs before.

any suggestions?

Plant the garlic around the basil or, marigolds. Alternatively, spray with weak soap solution.

Marigolds. What's eating it? Aphids? To do much damage it's got to be worms, honestly nothings ever messed with my basil or herb garden. Make sure you keep dill/fennel far away.

Spinosad is supposed to be safe. Can't comment on its efficacy as I haven't used it. Agreed on coplanting with marigolds.

Soap and oil sprays work if you can spray the insects directly. If you don't know what's eating them, it probably won't work. It's possible that it's not insects at all, but is slugs or snails. In that case, slug bait. Some of it is safe for humans and pets.

And you don't need herbicide. Herbicide kills plants. You need insecticide. :)

We have a problem with earwigs out here - they only come out during the night.

We usually put some Earwig and Sowbug bait out in the Spring, and it keeps them under control.

You could try BT, but you really need to find out what's eating it. If they are eating the leaves it's like some worm or larva. Are you sure it's just not happy? Then again, basil is hard to kill.
