I have a technics system, it is only about a year and a half old.

Tuner ST_K55
Amplifier- SU-686 (Class H+)
Equalizer GE_50
Cassette Deck- RS-TR180
CD Changer- SL-MC409

I hooked it up to our big screen TV about a month ago and it has been fine. Now when I turn the stereo on I get a scolling message across my Amplifier that says OVERLOAD.....PLEASE TURN OFF POWER......I can play a CD for about 25 seconds before I get this message, I used the stereo 4 days ago and it was fine, I have absolutely no clue what the hell the problem is here! Any ideas?

how many piece speaker set?

did you try setting it to play on stereo mode only? sounds like a speaker problem to me, but not TOO sure.. it could be a shorted speaker or something along those lines....

It has 5 speakers, and I did try it on just stereo without the other speakers and it does the same thing:(

hmm... something is seriously shorting out somewhere (sounds like it anyways)

give the whole system a good look over and make sure all the speaker wires are OK and that no wires are touching at the connectors on the back of the receiver and at the speaks too. maybe even if the wire is frayed it could have a strand of copper touching the other side of the wire, that could short it too!

Thank you Yield, I have made some progress! For some reason I can use every speaker setting I have, live, dolby surrond sound, theater,3 way stereo, it works fine but the second I put it on simulated surrond sound it gives me the overload message. That is if it is NOT hooked up to the tv.

When I hook it up to the tv the only way the stereo stays on is if I hit the speaker button and turn off the speakers (LOL), the second I turn them back on I get the overload message.

My stupid sony receiver has had this go bad 2 times now. I think that I had to solder a lose connection, and ground something to the metal case, but I am not too sure. Call your local Technics server center.

Good luck

definitely something up with a connection there...

I have seen stuff like this before, and it was in my case a frayed wire grounding itself onto the metal around the backplate of the speaker connector...

Need to find out where the problem is though!

Just curious, what kind of connection are you making from the TV to the Receiver?

Also, does this happen for all sources (CD/DVD/Radio) while the TV is hooked up?

Check the TV to see if its outputting a simulated surround sound (my Wega can and it screws up the sound on H/K receiver when turned on).

Basically, try to find out every combination of when it happens and when it doesn't to try and narrow it down (is that the software support in me showing up or what?).

have you checked for fuses in the back of your amp and speakers?

any storms lately that might of caused a power surge?

Please don't think I am braindead...........

The stereo is connected to the tv with a wire that splits into two (red/white) and plugs into the back of the tv
The dvd is plugged into the side of the TV with a yellow end for the video, and the red/white for the audio.

have you checked for fuses in the back of your amp and speakers?

I must really suck because I didn't even know they took fuses:eek:

Mind posting the make/model of the tv ... I'll see if I can find the manuals to it and your home theater setup to see if that helps.

1) they are called RF cables

2) Everything has fuses

3) (this is probably for someone who knows more about audio equipment than you to answer) Do you think it is possible that you blew your amp?? Do you often blare music extremely loud?? Has the amp. ever overheated before?? I had an amp. and it constantly shut off/overheated even after only a few minutes of use because I had just abused it so much.

-yup

Do you have a cat?

Seriously, they like to chew wires and sounds like a speaker wire to me.

They can short internally so if you know someone who has an Ohm/Multimeter, get them to check the wires.

RS has cheap ones.

Also check the back of your Receiver . The thing I hate about the older Technics is the lack of binding posts. Even a single strand of wire where it shouldnt be can cause your problem.

Could also be a ground loop problem (doubtful but possible)

Could try disconnecting everything and hooking back up one at a time till you find out what component is causing this.

This is all assuming of course that you dont have an internal problem with the amp!

the cat problem is what i was thinnking too. systematically disconnect speakers to see if you can stop the overload from occurring...

i can't find sh1t on the web about the SU 686 technics amplifier. Did you build component by component? or buy as a system? how much did you spend on the system?

I agree, I still believe it's a speaker wire issue, but until you figure out it's not a wiring problem, I'm stuck on that...

Yield: Hi whats up?

myputer: as Yield said, there's a short somewhere. Unplug ALL THE SPEAKERS and power up the amp. If the message goes away, the problem is somewhere in speaker connection. Usually a strand or two of wire jumping across a terminal and touching the other one. Start connecting speaker one by one until you get the message.
