I believe what I am doing is legit, the basics are...

I bought a dead dell optiplex from a person the Mobo and the PSU were fried, everything else is fine, so I stick the parts in a new case etc. the optiplex has a xp pro cd key.
I want to use the key in the new build Im using the dell parts in, Im wondering if I can do this.. I know dells PCs have the bios trick that makes it to where you dont have to type the cd key in.

But will it work on a non branded dell mobo/bios?
And if so is it legit to do it so WGA wont reject it?

I appreciate any help I get from this.

I also browsed the forums but couldnt really get an answer Im sorry if this has been asked alot.

IE.

If you use a Dell OS on a non Dell mobo it will not activate and you would need to call ms and hope they help you.
Also, technically, a Dell OS CD is an OEM copy that is supposed to be tied to the Originally Built / Sold computer
So legally, you can not use that os .. you might get away with using a generic OEM XP PRO CD to install and
activate using the Dell Key since that key is no longer being used by you

Unless that is a retail version of XP, it was tied to the fried Optiplex MB. You can replace the optiplex board and remian legal, but you can't transfer it to that new MB you bought.
