setup:
AIW Radeon (original)
chaintech 7SID motherboard(sis730)
2 sticks of tested micron 256Mb
XP pro sp1
directx 8

Before SP1, it would play cfs2 OK. Afterward, i ended up with a different driver, and big problems. I can swap a gf2 gts in here, and that games fine.
I have tried installing the latest drivers, to no avail.
Quake, cfs2,3, all wedge the computer completely within moments of startup. Any clues for this vidcard newbie?
Edit: I have also removed everything from the pci slots, just for grins. still wedges tight!
I have run dxdiag, and it seems OK, but I think the problem is with directx in some way.

Try to uninstall all of the video drivers on your system. There is a utility called driver cleaner.
Do a google search on the web for it. Follow the instructions in the text file supplied within the zip file.

I'll give that a try. I installed xp on another drive as an experiment, and the rig gamed fine on a fresh install. I reallllly do not want to resort to that, however. It smacks of the good 'ol Win98 days;)

What he said.
You might not be getting your old drivers out. After you get the new drivers loaded, reinstall the latest direct x.

OK, I've tried all that, and more. It appears something that came in with sp1 has hosed this OS install for gaming with an ATI. I have the gf2 gts in here right now, getting fragged just fine in Quake 3. Thank you all for your suggestions, I guess I'll put the radeon in another install.
