...I am going to law school next year and I just got something in the mail giving me an option to buy a laptop from the school, at a special price for the law school students. I was wondering if this was a good deal, and regardless, if I could get something comparable for cheaper. Here are the specs:

Dell Latitude D600 with 128MB Iomega Memory Key

14.1"TFT, Pm 1.4GHz, 256MB, 30GB HG, swappable DVD-ROM/CD-RW, Ethernet, integrated Intel wireless card, Internal 56k Modem, Windows XP Professional, 3 year on-site global warranty with Complete Care, No floppy...

Price is 1705.00

Any help would be greatly appreciated on this subject. Thank you so much!

-Matt

Okay, I just found another one throught the school, this one is an IBM. I really don't know much about these, anyway, here is the second one...

IBM Thinkpad T40 $1795.00

? Pentium Centrino 1.5GHz Processor
? 14.1? TFT Display
? 40GB Hard Drive
? 256MB RAM
? 56K Modem, Gigabit Ethernet and Integrated Wireless Card
? CD-RW / DVD-ROM Combo Drive
? Windows XP Professional
? 3 year warranty with ThinkPad Protection Plus

the complete care is the shining point of that system. Personally, i'd say just buy a laptop without the extended warranty with a credit card that offers added protection, usually double the standard.

One more question, assuming this is not a good deal or there is a better one out there, somewhere: Would I be able to get the exact same package from elsewhere???

I would buy the IBM, $1550 would be a hot deal, $1800 looks like retaill which is not a Hot Deal.

Dell has Hot Deals but they seem to rotate about every 4 weeks.

Just wait till Dell have one of their usual SALE.

I bought a Dell 600m

Pentium M 1.3 with 14.1 +SVGA(1400x1050)
30gb
32mb Radeon 9000
dvd/rw drive
384mb rams
wireless, etc..

For 1309 Shipped -250 rebate so about $1050.
So a similar laptop right now at Dell, its $1300++.

those prices seem high....the IBM is about onpoint, as they are ALWAYS expensive, great products, just expensive IMO.

That thinkpad seems cheap. Aren't the T40's two grand and up?

Honestly, for the money, you cannot beat a thinkpad. It will last you forever as long as you don't drop kick it everywhere you go or something. The T-series are EXCELLENT laptops. The only downside is the price 🙁

Edit: just checked, with my discount, T40's range from 1900-2100, I can't see any options other then a 1.5ghz chip, 40gb drive and 256mb ram, IBM's website is being weird for me. Check the IBM ebay store, but I bet the deal your school offered is the best around.
