I just got done with a little "meet your RA and RD" meeting here at my school, and frankly, some of the policies are downright nazi.
I can understand them not letting us drink, its the law, and they have to enforce it, duh. But they have other policies such as no posters or decorations in your room with beer/alcohol company logos.

So what i'm asking for help is, does anyone know where I can find information on groups that promote lowering the drinking age, etc.

btw: if you disagree, just don't post. I'm not asking your opinion.

I lived in a dorm about 5 years ago.

We used to borrow the RA 's mini-fridge to store extra beer.

I also had a big Budweiser poster on my door and every wall in the room.

All this and I was only 19 :)

Boy, how things have changed.

Anyway, I think there was a movement in louisiana to lower the drinking age a few years ago. Either that or they just changed the drinking age from 18 a few years ago.
There is an Indian casino in Western Iowa that will serve 18 yr olds.

I was never actually caught for drinking. We had some creative ways of hiding the 3 cases of beer we brought in every Friday night. Like up the outside of the building with the RA on the other side of the brick wall..

And it seemed at the end of every quarter, someone would get a new "Gateway". Funny thing. Those Gateway boxes always had kegs in em. It really didn't make sense, that at the end of the year, someone was buying a new computer.

My roommate and I had "BEER" written in our cieling with bottle caps.

Basically, the policy you describe, Buddha Bart, is a bunch of sh*t. Just print out signs that say "Beer" and put them everywhere on your walls. "Drink more Beer" "Beer is good" and when they b*tch, say it don't have a company logo on it. Hmm. Time for me to run off to the kegerator in my kitchen and get another beer!

A lot of this came after some kid (actually I think he was about 20 years old) at MIT drank himself to death.

The parents are sueing MIT, saying it must be there fault as they never let him drink at home. Me thinks its the parents fault for exactly that reason - they never taught him to drink responsably.

As much fun as a college-drinking-tales thread would be, I'm trying to be serious.
One of the problems with my school is, it *used* to be a catholic school. To the point where there are still many many priests on campus. There are lots of just plain rediculous laws, that no self respecting adult would put up with. (eg no "cohabitation" members of the opposite sex may not sleep in any room of the other sex)
The problem is, almost no one undersandts that they are adults, they are being insulted, and without being cheesy, oppressed by these rules.

Not trying to be a smart@ss, but why would people go there if they didn't like those regulations? Wouldn't they be happier going to a school that was more liberal?

I've never been to a college that "lets" members of the opposite sex sleep in each other's rooms. Maybe your expectations are a little extreme based on stories you've heard? Dunno.
And beer posters make you look like a mindless boob. I recommend taking advantage of the situation and putting up something classy.
Just my two cents.

I think the main reason that the Posters and such are not allowed is because the school has to protect itself from lawsuits. They don't allow it because, as rediculiuos a it may sound, if some kid with a Budwesier poster on his wall drank to much and jumped in front of a car the school could probably be sued. So they have taken the necessary steps to stop those suits from being possible.

While the reposibility to teach kids does belong in the home it also belongs in the person as well. If you are 18 and choose to break the law and drink and something happens......... guess what,, you're not a minor anymore and will not be treated like one.

What is it with this dorm living in the US. Here in Oz, when you go to Uni, you just rent some old terrace house & share it with your mates.

Mind you just about all us Aussies get 'Austudy', which is the Australian govt student allowance, it works out to be about $220 a week, if one goes to tech or Uni. So, I spose there's a bit more financial indepedence, as one doesnt have to spung on their folks so much, while at uni.

Tech is better as the fees work out to be less than $200 a year, while it can cost anywhere between about $1000 & $3000 to go to Uni. But even then once you take into account the govt is giving you $220 a week to go to uni, you still work out ahead.

I don't think I've ever met an Aussie who ever stayed in dorms at Uni, even though they do exist. Its just that, well here in Sydney the 2 main Unis are in old inner city suburbs, where there's planty of old run down terrace houses that students can rent out. So that's what they all do.

$220 a week? Thats nice. Sounds like your gov. is looking out for its people. Wish we could get something like that in the states.
