Right now i have at Seagate 15.3K cheetah SCSI drive. Absolutely adores the performance, loads HL2 in a snap.

My case is very quiet, its an lian li PC6085 with Nexus Silent fans. The CPU uses a 80MM fan, 2 intake, 1 exhaust and a very quiet 92MM fan for the PSU.

The noisiest component is the SCSI drive. It does not produce a loud whining noise but it is still gnerally MUCH MUCH louder than my dad's 250GB Seagate IDE drive.

I am going to add another 147GB 10K SCSI drive to my system. I need to find a way to quiet down my system.

I am contemplating to buy a new case, the lian li PC 6070 (http://www.anandtech.com/casec...g/showdoc.aspx?i=2008) and use a better noise dampening foam.

Will that be effective?

I dunno. Those 15KRPM SCSI drives are just *loud*, and the 10KRPM ones I've seen aren't much better. You might try an elastic mount to cut down on vibration, and/or some acoustic damping material around the drive cage and/or case. But 15KRPM SCSI != quiet, no matter what you do.

You could get an external SCSI enclosure and a 10-meter external LVD SCSI cable, and put those drives down in the basement :D

Big picture: I have a 15k.3 and I don't think it's very loud at all. To me, it sounds about the same as my sister's 120GB Hitachi ATA/100 drive, minus the freaky "meow" noise the Hitachi makes. No, it isn't Barracuda-7200.7 quiet, but is a Dodge Viper as quiet as a Dodge Caravan when you tromp on the gas? ;) I like it when Mrs. Cheetah growls for me...

I've got the Lian Li PC6070 case and it is a REAL disappointment, the foam does not reduce sound much at all. The hard drives are very noisy because they are attached via the metal bracket. I have a Seagate SATA 80Gb and 2 WD 120Gb and the seek noise they produce is a lot.

I recommend a Antec Sonata because it has hard drive trays that have rubber grommets, which attach to the hard drive to reduce sound when seeking or idle the grommets work very very well can hardly hear them.

Hope this helps

First, don't mount hard into the case, mount with some rubber damping it against the drive rack in the case.

Then, put fleece on the iside of the case alongside the drive. I had that problem until recently, I just put fleece on the inside of the case side covers which helped a lot.

Note that this capures some airflow, you want to watch the heat situation for a while.

If you have an aluminium case, get a steel one.
