I need some free webspace w/FTP access with no ads.

Towards the end of December, I had to switch from DirecTV 1500/128 DSL to SBC 1500/128kb DSL because DirecTV went out of buseness. The only differences are that SBC uses PPPoe (but I get around that with my router), and SBC doesn't provide FTP space.

Does anyone have an FTP server that they'd like to give me an account with, or know of a free site with no ads? I spent about an hour searching, but they either had ads, costed money, or pictures wouldn't show up elsewhere (as in sigs on other forums).

Is paying a huge problem? You can probably find some good hosting for just a few dollars a month.

I'd let you use the ftp space that I have but then you'd know my password :p I got some ftp space that hasn't been cancelled from an ISP I got TOS'd by :)

BTW, see my sig.

The FTP account itself wouldn't have ads. However, as Web pages were served up from the site, pop-ups could also appear.

Oh, he needs webspace, with ftp access.

Makes sense now ;)

Paying is a problem, as I don't want to since I've had free personal FTP space since 1996...

Why not host your own?

I turn my computers off at night, and I don't have parts to build a dedicated server. 128kb of upload bandwidth is NOT enough to host a server, and it'd slow my own connection down. To top it all off, SBC drops my connection after so long (PPPoe), and I have to reset the modem so the router can reconnect the PPPoe stuff. So, if I hosted a server it'd be down half the time :p

Good luck. Companies for the most part aren't going to just give you completely free hosting and not make any money off of advertisements. There's no reason to. If you really need the space, and it *really* can't have ads, pay the paltry $5 or $10 per month.

That's not true at all. It's not fast enough to host a busy site obviously, but for a personal website or for hosting random images or whatever, it's plenty. I don't really do much tracking of visitors, but just grepping and whatnot through my apache access log, yesterday I had 288 unique hostnames (297 counting nimda and code red hits ;)) access something or another on my site, be it an image linked from elsewhere (screenshots generally), a file, a page, whatever, and no one ever complains of it being slow. I've looked at 1600x1200 screenshots of mine from work, and they don't load that slowly.

Brinkster is good enough for me. It doesn't provide true FTP access, but what they've got in their site is good enough...it's basically dumbed down FTP.

No ads have popped up. Let's see if I can link a pic.

Thank you!

You can't even afford a measely $5/yr, $10/yr, $20/yr?

For $5/yr you can get 100MB webspace, 1GB bandwidth, cPanel, FTP, e-mail, webmail, MySQL, PHP, and more.

Nope. In addition, I see no point in paying for a service that I've used for free for the past 7 years.

Brinkster is fine.

do pigs fly?

According to Gerbil who can't afford to pony up $5/yr they do.

I'll be willing to give him free hosting (I'll pay for his $5/yr) but there's one huge catch, he's gotta use a really embarassing domain (which I'll also pay for) something like Imacheapass..................er.com
