OK, let's say I have 3-4 piece band going, consisting of piano, drums, bass, and (hopefully soon) guitar. The piano is the driving instrument, and the music is rock (think of Elton John or Billy Joel, that sort of thing). I have an upright piano, and want to amplify it. The sound of the piano has to be very full and capable of getting loud enough without picking up too much extraneous sound (again, think of Elton or Billy, I mention those two cause everyone knows who they are and what they sound like).
I have three mics to work with, although I'd prefer to use only two of them if possible so the third can be left for singing. They are:
Shure Sm-57
Audio-Technica ATR 30
Audio-Technica ATR 20
I have one mic stand, but can get another if need be. Everything will be running through a small Crate PA system, 2 10" speakers and a six channel powered mixer. I've tried several combinations and placements and whatnot, but frankly, I don't know what the hell I'm doing.
Everything else sounds wonderfully in balance, except the piano. I can't seem to get it loud enough without either picking up all kinds of outside sounds (sounds other than the piano, like breathing or rustling carpet), or getting deafening feedback. I'm not trying to overpower much, the other guys aren't that loud, but they are electric and the piano is the driving instrument of this music.
So, if y'all could either provide some help to my dilemma (remember this is an UPRIGHT piano, not a grand), or direct me to a source that could, I would greatly appreciate it, the more thorough the better. If I think of anything else, or you need more information, I'll add it.
Thanks, folks!
