Hey all, I'm not the best in buying, matching and coordinating clothes so I'm looking for a little bit of help if that's OK with you guys. This week, I'll be wearing a shirt and a tie to an event so just needed some advice. I've already bought the outfit but need some help with shoes.

It'll be a checkered shirt, solid colored tie and blue (almost navy) slacks. I'm thinking of going with dark colored shoes since they seem to add a bit of contrasting. However, black shoes might be more versatile and can accommodate more styles. I am going to assume that both dark brown and black shoes will be fine.

Any other tips or suggestions? I am also looking to enhance the look of the clothes I wear generally. Getting a bit tired of the polo shirt and khaki pant look.

If you don't already own a decent pair of black shoes buy a decent pair of black shoes.

Go with black shoes. Also what is really in right now is wearing socks with color highlights. Like wearing gray socks with purple stripes or black harlequin socks with bold harlequin colors. Check banana Republic website.

When I worked in retail I wore navy blues pants, my red store given shirt and a brown type of shoe. It was dark brown but the outer part was a light brown. They were nice shoes and glossy. Black goes with damn near anything and is a safe bet. Checkered shirt? Meh. Visit Jos. A Bank!

Black shoes, blue laces.
And the meh on a checkered shirt is seconded. Stripes are fine, in some cases, but unless you're trying to blend in with some engineers, checkered shirts are too busy.

Piano neck tie

That's if you want both style, and class.

Perfect!

It depends. All you said was you have on navy slacks. What color shirt? What color tie? You can wear other color shoes besides black and dark brown w/ navy. But generally those two colors should be fine. If you shirt tie are more "earthy" colors (blue, brown, green, etc) then wear the brown shoes. If the shirt/tie are reds/purps etc then I'd do black.

If you're ever wondering what things match, there are a lot of "pins" on Pintrest under Men's Fashion that can help.
