A friend of mine asked my advice on good headphones for a portable cd player, and wants to spend about $40.00 on them. So could you guys help me out and make some recommendations? Thanks alot!

Headwize

for $40 you aren't going to get the best of headphones. KOSS' aren't too bad, I believe you can get the TD-80 for $40.

If you can, e-bay often sells headphones for cheap. I hear great things about the Grado SR-60s. I myself have Sennheiser HD525s. I only got them because they were the cheapest 500 series.

Kamiam, you are so lucky that it's the holiday season, and that I am feeling cheery. Or else you would feel my wrath! :p

Thanks again guys, I will be sure to pass this information on. :)

I have a pair of Grado SR60's and they rock! :D These are hands down the most awesome pair of headphones I've ever owned... for $40 you could probably get a pair of SR40's at Headphone.com, and that would be pretty good...

For an affordable, yet high quality pair, try the Grado SR60s that others have recommended. Great sound at a good price.

Another vote for Sennheisers. I have the HD490's which aren't really the best ones out there but they sound good to me.

Apart from the usual Sennheisers and Grado recommendations (very good stuff) I have a soft spot for the Koss PortaPros (or whatever incarnation they are at right now) Light, comfortable, and portable.

I mean, as much as the Sennheisers and Grados are nice cans, would you seriously take them out with you? I've never seen anyone walking around with Grado SR-60s on the street. That would be kind of strange.

GirlFriday,

Since your friend's budget is under $40 (I guess some people don't read the specifics and direct towards $80+ headphones), I'll recommend the following: Head over to your local Circuit City store and purchase the Panasonic headphones for $29.99. These are "closed" style headphones and feature an excellent frequency response, a 16' cord (a bit long for a portable), an on-cord volume control and sound very good with a portable CD player. The bass is pretty good on these headphones and I no longer have to utilize my bass boost button on my portable player.

If you purchase these from Circuit City and decide you don't like them, you have 30 days to return them for a full refund.

As far as the comment about anything from Sennheiser being good. I think this is not truly the case. Some of their cheaper lighter-weight headphones are not that good.

Wow, thanks guys, I am sure he will find this very useful! The problem is he is young, and does not have alot of money yet, so he has to be kind of cheap with them for now. I really appreciate this. :)

bill_n_opus:

Forgot about the Koss PortaPro's! I came across a pair a few months ago at Disney World (of all places!) and I was seriously impressed... wasn't expecting much, based on their feel, but they were excellent... if I didn't have these SR60's I'd probably pick up a pair myself.

I agree with Wje........ those Panasonic headphones are pretty good (and light years ahead) of the crappy ear pieces that they give you. The price is not bad either.

Cheers,

Hey Dave, how are your Grados anyways? I was thinking of picking up some a long while back but ended not doing so. My PortaPros were good enough that I figured that it didn't make sense to have two sets of cans. Similar to what you said but in the reverse order.

The only possible negative thing about the Grados i've heard is that it takes awhile to break in them in fit-wise. Did you find the same thing? Or was it comfortable from the get go?
