Me- I'm 33 yrs old (going to be 34 soon), returning college student who only has 3 semesters till graduation. I'm a special education major by the way. I was making $40,000 a yr. doing heavy labor but I wanted a better life so I quit work and went back to college to obtain my degree in the teacher of the handicapped field.

My dilema- I live on my own and I have a lot of bills. I'm in semi debt.

My bills per month:

Rent- $450
Electric- 35
Car- 300
Car Ins- 100
Fleet- 125
Ameridebt- 140
Comcast- 60
Amer General Finance- 55
Dell- 40

As you can tell I have a few expenses. I'm thinking about moving back home with my parents till I graduate from college, as I do work full time but it only pays $8.60 per hr. I do midnight security at my local mall and it's a decent job because it allows me to go to school full time while I pay my bills. I don't have a life and the pay sucks though. But it's only temp. Finding a job teaching special ed shouldn't be a problem for me, but I need that degree.

So what should I do? Should I move back home with my parents for the three semesters or should I toughen it out? In fact... My landlord came to me and lowered my rent rom $530-450 because of my financial problems. My landlord is very understanding and will work with me on my rent. How many landlords are this nice? Not many.

Also.. I usually get between $2500-3000 in a financial aid refund check. I usually apply that towards my bills. Helps out big time.

Pro's on moving back home:

Save money and pay off debt
Can take an extra day off from work and apply that to college studies. Will work 32 hrs instead of 40 hrs.
No rent, electric and comcast cable payments.

Con's on moving back home:

Would lose privacy
I'll be 34 yrs old! Would feel a bit weird, eventhough it's temporary
Would lose cool apartment and would have to search all over again. Could be a pain in the ass.

Well that's it. Oh.. I didn't even count gas. I attend Rowan University and it's 1 hr 45 min one way from where I live. I'm talking 60 miles one way, 3 days a week. I use a lot of gas. Gets expensive.

thxs guys...

I agree. It sounds like you'll move out again fairly soon anyway after you finish school so I don't see why not. Not all parents are as accomodating as yours.

So you are at $1,005.00

I say move out of your apartment and into your car that's $450 you don't have to pay for rent and seeing as how your car cost just as much as you rent you have to get rid of one.

IF you move into your car then you don't have to pay Electric bill's that's -$35 and you are down to $520.00

Since you wont have an address you wont have to pay your other bills anymore so that -$140, -$55, -$40 damn you are down to $285 a month! Dayyyum!

I'd keep the car payments up and the insurance, you never know who might jack you.

Who is the bigger loser... the guy who moves back in with his parents and gets his life on track, or the guy who refuses to move in with his parents and lives in poverty all of his life?

That's true. When I ask for opinions on this matter, I'll get the "move back home and save money" to "your old enough to live on your own."

Also I'll get the... "toughen it out for those 3 semesters."

thxs for the advice. I need to decide quick because I need to give my landlord enough time so she can find someone to take my place if I decide to leave.

so you haven't taken out any student loans?

If not, then borrowing for 1 year to pay for your senior year might not be a bad Idea. Use it to pay off the car and get rid of the car payment. that would be an extra $75 a week.

Another option is to arrange your schedule so that you can substitute teach 1 day a week. This usually pays about 100 a day. You will also get good experience and will may find a school in your area that you will want to hire you.

student loans... lol.

I owe $30,000 so far. I made some bad choices in my past so now I owe a bit of money. I'll worry about paying off the school loans when I graduate from college, so Im not really worried about that. And I need the financial aid to take my classes. My school tuition went up almost 15% this year due to NJ's financial crisis. Thank you Governor. :|

As stated I'm still getting financial aid. I usually get a refund check which totals $2,000-3,000. The money goes to bills.

And about substituting... I'd love to do it, but with me working midnights and being involved with Junior practicum it might not be an option. Btw... Jun. practicum requires us to meet at 4 different public schools 2 times a week. Once there, we get to work with children who have LD, multiple disabilities, etc. So I'm getting class room experience but I do understand where your coming from. Also... I'll be doing my student teaching in a year.

I'm 25 and I'm moving into my Grandparents this fall while I go to school. Rent free. So it will take my mind off things and just allow me to concentrate on school. I'm still going to be working lots, but just having the extra money for school and other stuff will be nice.

Bonus part is they live in a super nice condo and are wintering in California from Oct to April. hehe

I think your education should take top priority since it seems you're committed to it as a future. I'd move back home assuming the situation is tolerable. This will take off a major monthly bill and allow you to work less and apply yourself more to your studies.
