I had my PC running XP Pro with the SP2 updates for 3 months. In the middle of BF1942 XP crashed and the system rebooted. It came up with the following error
C:\Windows\System32\Config\System corrupted or no longer exists
insert xp cd, reboot and type r for recovery
or something like that. I did what it said and rebooted into recovery mode. I copied the files from the repair directory into the config directory. Same error everytime I rebooted. So I decided to reinstall XP Pro. What a mistake. It boots from the CD fine. I go and try to install with the option to leave the directory structure. Every minute or so Windows install says it can't copy a "DLL" or "exe" or "inf". I keep pressing enter for retry but it wont copy the file. I start over again and the same thing happens only it is different "DLLs" or "EXEs" or "INFs". I thought maybe it was my CD Drive so I switched it out. I've tried 3 different DVD/CD/DVD-RW drives and still the same result. I thought maybe it was my hard drive so I switched and tried to install using my backup drive. The same things are happening again. Then I tried different Windows XP Pro CDs that I borrowed from my two neighbors. The same thing is still happening.
HELP! I don't know what to try next to get it to install.
Thanks,
