OK, my computer room is starting to sound like a wind tunnel with all of my boxen on at the same time, which is often. I have replaced most of the case fans with Vantec stealth fans and they are quiet, now the source of fan noise is my CPU fans, what do you guys recommend, these are Athlon XPs 2600, 1700 and 1600 CPUs and they are NOT overclocked, I just want good, quiet fans. My MDD Powermac sounds like a wind tunnel as well but I am going to replace it with a new G5, they are supposed to be much quieter. Any recommendations would be appreciated, I don't want to spend a fortune but I want good stuff, and preferably something that Newegg has.

I have a Thermaltake SilentBoost, and as I have said before, it's a great heatsink. People here don't like Thermaltake much, but this HSF is just great. I can't hear it at all.

If you just need a fan, and no Heatsink, the Panaflows always get good reviews. What size of fan is on your heat sink now?

I've always used Panaflo's for CPU fans. You can choose from three different flavors. But if you are not overclocking, try the most silet type which are the A series.

Regarding Thermaltake Silentbost fans, I will take a look. It is ironic that all my fans now are Thermaltake Volcanos, that are making all the noise.

What about making the fans 5v, how is this mod done?

Panaflo or Panaflow (I never remember which one is the correct nomenclature..). There are three series in the brand.... if you look at the model number, there will be a suffix LIA, M1A, H1A. L denotes low CFM, RPM, and noise.
M for medium, H for high.

I find that my Barton 2500+ is cooled fine w/ an 80mm L1A @ ~7V on a Thermalright SLK-800A. At that point, I can barely hear the fan spinning with an open case, and can't hear it with a closed case. Actually, the only components I can hear are my harddrives.

For a good enthusiast quiet-computing website, you might want to check out www.silentpcreview.com. There more undervolt/underclock oriented than they are overvolt/overclock.

edit1: the forum link code gets me every time...
edit2: added SLK-800A info

I should also note that my 2500+ is undervolted to 1.30V. Since I'm on an NF7-S, I use NF7Vcore to dynamically adjust my FSB based on load from 100MHz to 166MHz, all at 1.30V.
