I need quick opinions for school purchases next year

My estranged father has given me 1 thousand dollars to buy a laptop for school. I don't really need one as I have a solid desktop system. I can't decide if I should buy the laptop (which would be fully financed later) or if I should upgrade my desktop with a new monitor, and get an ipod or something, as I would use the laptop a lot for entertainment on the road (long bus trips) and not so much work (graphic design).

Egads! Thoughts?
 
call him back and tell him you're gonna need atleast another thousand, then we can talk laptops!😀
 
If the school has wireless, Get an Axim with 802.11b, and upgrade your monitor, and possibly some other components, if you have money left over.
 
i had a desktop and a laptop while i was in college -- i almost never used my laptop, often times i lent it to my roomate before he got his own computer.

my desktop was just so much more usefull.. better screen, more powerfull, better keyboard, real mouse.. etc.


of course, that was 3 years ago. Now i have a new laptop and it's the only thing i use. I havent touched a desktop in at least 6 months. (of course, you couldnt buy it on a 1k budget either... )
