* I need quick help on win2k installation *

Hi, all

how do I do a clean installation of win2k with a existing copy of win2k installed already ?

I boot from cd and format and fdisk the old win2k partition

after finishing installtion and reboot, there are "2" choices of win2k OS (1 old and 1 new) the boot menu option...

am I doing something wrong ?
and how come there is 2 OS option (both win2k) in the boot menu instead of 1 ?

I am puzzled...
Help and advice is appreciated...

btw, is there a way to have all the win2k files on the harddisk so when asked for driver, I don't need to use the installation cd ? p.s. direct copying all files to the harddisk from the installation cd won't work..

many many thanks

there are two options becuz u didn't fdisk the master boot record. so dun worry... u didn't screw anything up.

boot from win2k cd

choose new install

delete old partition

install on empty partition

choose ntfs

and so on

boot into windows, and copy the i368 folder over the to hard drive. take not of the path of the location (ie - c:\i386). then go into regedit and "hkey_local_machine"--> "software"--> "microsoft"--> "windows"--> "current version"--> "setup". in there, look for something along the lines of "sourcepath". right now, since u installed off the cd, it should say something like "x:\i386", where x is ur cd drive letter. right click and modify that to be the path of the i386 folder on ur hd.

I follow all this step...

> boot from win2k cd - ok

> choose new install - ok

> delete old partition - ok

> install on empty partition - ?

I install on the partition that I just format and fdisk...

so I have 2 boot option on menu is because I didn't delete MBR ?

hmm...
still scratching my head...

you dont need fdisk for anything, the win2k installer has its own disk manager for creating partitions

When you see the list of awailable partitions you will probably see the first part as an unpartioned partition with some space, just choose that and pick ntfs when it asks

follow that exactly.. use win2k format and disk manager to recreate the partition...

hmm... 2 partitions...

done this a few times..

and every time it's a pain to reformat the WHOLE hd...

Boot from your Win2k CD and delete all existing partitions and create a 4 or 5 gig partition for C: and format that and use that as your install partition. You can partition drives to smaller sizes so you don't have to wait for a 10+ gig partition to format. Best thing is to install your OS on a 4 gig partition minimum and use the rest of the drive space in a secondary partition for apps/data/games.
