i need processor help

ok i am so confused on which processor to go with i have one friend telling me p4 i have another telling me athlon xp i see the tests but i am told that sysmark 2001 cant test sse tech. so i really need help which processor really is the best. thanks for the help:confused
 
ditto, a couple of questions:

What's your budget?
What applications do you use?
What's the specs for your current system [depending on what M/B and P/S you have your upgrade could be cheap or expensive] ?
 
i dont have a really tight budget i was wanting a p4 and a motherboard that still supported dimm, and yes stock speed because the only thing i think i know is that the p4 is faster and the only reason the xp hangs is because it is overclocked??(right i think). ok what componets i have now are a seagate 30 gig hard drive creative live value and geforce2 with ddr and i am bought a case with a 300 watt power suppy. and i bought windows xp pro. there i think that i have it all and i really app. your help hope to hear your conclusion soon. thanks
