Reason being, modern games are crap, sorry but they are. Im thinking along the RTS lines here, not every genre.

I have played and liked:
All c&c's bar generals, generals was OK, but not great
All the earth games, bar earth 2160, it was OK but not great
Emporer battle for dune - It was OK
Star trek armada II - awsome, had low expectations but it was great
Age of empires II/III - III was... nah... not my thing
Warcraft III - it was good, im just a fanatical sc fan
Starcraft - the best
Imperium galactica II - twas good, was really looking forward to the sequal

hmm is there a pattern? for the record generals, 2160, AOE III are the latest in each of those franchises.

I have thought about playing and hopefully liking:

Total annihilation / Total annihilation kingdoms
Dune 2000
umm... yea.. well thats about it, i havent thought much heh.

What else could i buy n play? Ive got a lot of free time which i will use to go to the gym! and play video games! YEA!! Tell me what would be a good buy?

I loved Total Annihilation back in the day (not Kingdoms though). The two "races" in the game pretty much have the same units with just slight differences. There are tons of units though and some of the maps are HUGE. Since the units of each side are almost identical and everybody can produce hundreds of units, strategy is a bit more than just spearmen vs. cavalry in small 30 unit battles. The single player A.I. is pretty weak, especially by today's standards, but multiplayer is loads of fun if you can find a few other people.

We used to play 4 person games on a massive map with four islands. My favorite TA moment was during a LAN against a friend who likes to play using fighter aircraft. He had a very heavily fortified base and hundreds of little fighter jets that could travel quickly and do immense amounts of damage in one pass over your base. Another friend and I set a trap by building hundreds of light scout ships and anti-aircraft flak ships. I positioned the anti-air ships behind the scout ships (hundreds total) and sent them down to his island. He saw a huge wall of red blips enter his radar range and immediately sent out his fighter craft. His fighters flew one pass over the scout ships, destroying most of them, and slowed down to turn around for another pass... right above the flak ships. Everyone's computers slowed to a crawl during this battle because there were at least 400 hundred units fighting in the middle of the map.

Just imagine Warcraft with robots, nearly unlimited build queues, 10 times more units, and much, much larger maps. The multiplayer games took so long that we often just gave up and spent the next hour talking about all the stuff that happened during the game. It was fun.

Rise of Nations - Is that like empire earth II?
Homeworld 2 - Yea ive got that too, it was a nice ride. Battleships really kicked in it.
Warhammer: 40,000: Dawn of War - Is that like lord of the rings battle for middle earth?

TA sounds like a bandwagon i shudda jumped on :) I did the same with red alert 2, it was awsome fun. Onetime i 2v1'ed my two friends and mauled them. Good times good times...

I haven't played Empire Earth 2 or the LOTR game so I can't compare them.

Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War and its expansion Winter Assault, and its upcoming expansion Dark Crusade.

If you arent familiar with the WH40k universe then SC would be a good parallel. Sci-Fi setting, a couple of Human factions, demons, inexplicably evil creatures etc... Micromanagement features quite heavily in certain armies. Quite a lot of the units have upgrades and certain ways to make them individual. A basic Space Marine squad can have up to 8 marines I believe and can carry up to 4/5 heavy weapons from a selection of 4 types... each capable of its own form of delicious brutality.

Almost anyone linked to WH40k will shoot me for linking it to Starcraft but Im of the opinion that game-wise (Starcraft Vs. Dawn of War), they are quite similar in certain areas and I feel it is an acceptable way to briefly inform someone of what type of game it is.

Homeworld 1 and Homeworld Cataclysm.

Since you've got Homeworld 2, try Homeworld 1 and Cataclysm. I found 1 to be better than 2, perhaps due to the fact it really gripped me into the story after the 3rd mission and the fact it was sort of different when it came out. Cataclysm isnt great due to the rather uninteresting story but it provides a good level of fun.

I think you'll like WH 40K, Dawn of War. I got bored of RTS but that game was fun. Didn't care for Winter Assault as much, but it was still okay.

Nah, had enough of turn based stuff. C&C is my thing. Ill give WH40k a try and see how that pans out.

Another vote for rise of nations. Started playing it recently again, great fun. Actually they just came out with rise of legends. That one is supposed to be a sequel, but everyone has said not much has changed in gameplay. Since you haven't played the first one, the new one won't feel like the same game.

Warhammer 40k is a good RTS, lots of fun. I think SC took a lot from the Warhammer 40k world (zerg-tyranids, space marines, etc). Actually, wasn't there a lawsuit about that?

I got Rise of Legend recently. Its fun, but I haven't played Rise of Nations so I don't know how similiar they are.

Also, R:TW. How come no one mentioned this?

As I mentioned, if you like Dawn of War, pick up Winter Assault expansion pack and look out for Dark Crusade, due for release this Autumn.

Homeworld 1 and 2, I picked up for about £10 each a good 6-10 months ago so it shouldnt set you back much. Actually, Dawn of War GOTY edition + Winter Assault shouldnt be *that* expensive either.

I know Im missing some great game, roughly of this genre, but I cant put my finger on it at the moment.

Rise of Legends is being heralded as having an absolutely amazing sp campaign. Not sure I buy the whole "modern games are crap".

Anyhow, If you start looking at Total Annihilation. Look at Total Annihilation: Spring. It's a modified version of TA made by fans to utilize recent hardware such that you can have hundreds of units in a battle. It also adds the ability to control any unit like an FPS if you want to. (IE: Want to fly a jet over the water for a special bombing run, take control of one and go for it)

KKND. (Krush Kill 'n' Destroy, IIANM (If I Am Not Mistaken).

Don't know if it'll work on these XP machines nowadays.

It was something like C&Cs of the olden days, but different skins, and weapons, and missions obviously.

I agree with the OP's hopeful feelings on TA and TA:K.
Both excellent games in my opinion.

Would also like to suggest the great sleeper of 2005 and possibly all time:
ACT OF WAR!
Awesome for those of us who were Jones'n for some Supreme Commander and had to wait for delay after delay.

Also, if the OP liked Imperium Galactica 2 and is mad they killed the franchise, I could recommend some NEXUS: Jupiter Incident action if he likes the big ship battles. Its similar to Homeworld only fewer ships with more detail. Sort of like Starfleet Commander, but a lot more fun.

As far as traditional space conquest games go, the last installment of Master Of Orion was kind of disappointing, and there hasnt been too much else lately.
We'll just have to wait.

Naw rise of nations is not that complicated...bit buggy on some machines though?
