I need new tires :(

Well, I've been putting it off for a while now, but I've decided it's time to bite the bullet and spend the $500 plus on new tires for my car. I went out there today with a ruler, and the tread is between 1/16" and 2/16" in the back, and 2/16" and 3/16" in the front. My car uses kind of an oddball size, so local selection is rather limited. I'm probably going to have to special order a decent set of tires, so I'm looking for opinions right now.

I need a set of 245/50-16 high quality tires. Must be all season, performance oriented, no less than "V" rated, and not higher than $130 apiece.

These are the tires I've pretty much decided on. Pirelli P-Zero Neros. Does anyone have these tires currently? How do you like them? They seem to get pretty good reviews on the Tirerack, and a local store can install them for $128 each, but would have to special order them. They're also kind of on the high end of my price range, and I'd like to spend less if I could. I just wanted to see if anyone on here had them and what their opinions are before I got them.

Or, if anyone has any other recommendations, I'd love to hear it!

What kind of car do you have? Also, what region of the country do you live in?

Heh, oops, I guess that's kind of important 😱. My fault for forgetting.

This is for the 88 Trans Am I just pulled out of storage. I live in Lansing, MI so good rain handling is an absolute must. Decent snow rating wouldn't hurt either, but is not as important because this car gets stored as soon as it starts getting snowy/icy.

Yes, for the GTA. I've heard good things about the BFGs, and they are the same price as the PZeros @Discount tire. That's one of the others on my list of possibles.

They've got the HR4's on sale at tirerack if you don't mind going to an H-rated instead of V. Do you ever run above 130 for extended periods?

Check Tire Rack. You might have to spend more than $500 to get what you want.

I've been on the Tire rack off and on today when I've had time. I know I'll probably have to spend over $500, but I refuse to put another set of cheezy tires on my car. The ones that are on there now are Grand Spirit SR+4s, and they suck. Put on by the previous owner before I got it. I didn't like them, but couldn't justify spending the $$ to replace nearly new tires, even if they were crappy.

I still don't really want to spend the money on it, but the car is really starting to get tail happy in the rain. Plus, too many more miles and these things will be down to cords :Q.

Erm...noo....but I have in the past 😱. I'd rather get something that I wouldn't have to worry about in case I ever do take it up there again (which isn't likely, but you never know). In other words, I guess I'd rather have my top speed limited by the car, rather than the tires. I'd consider Hs, but would rather pick up something with the higher rating.

Those tires are actually the ones I've got. I've run them at 120+ more times than I can remember and never had a problem. The speed rating is really a measure of how well the tire dissipates heat. So as long as you don't run them for a long time, they'll do 130+ OK IMHO. Back when I bought mine, the Z rated were way more expensive so the price/performance difference wasn't worth it to me.

The BFGoodrich KDWS are awesome tires, thought they only lasted about 25k miles on my father's Audi. The KDWS don't have a tread mile warranty either. My friend has the Yokohama ES100 on his S2000, he's says they are great in the rain, but it is obviously a summer tire and wouldn't do well in the snow. My uncle has the ES100 on his bmw 325i, he likes 'em better than the Continental ContiSport he had on before. Continental tires, do, however, come with a road hazard warranty from Continental themselves.

For your price range, I'd take a look at the Continental ContiExtreme ($100, WR, no tread warranty), the ES100 ($97, WR no tread warranty), the Avid V4S ($97, VR 60kmiles), or those Pirelli tires you have in mind.

Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S is probably the best bang for the buck street performance tire right now. W rated, 400 treadwear, AA traction, and All-Season too so no need to have separate summer and winter tires.

I concur. Great rain traction, great asphalt traction, quiet, and lasts pretty long for a performance tire.

Oh and its affordable.

When I saw your tire size I was thinking that looks like a thirdgen. You might want to ask over at thirdgen.org

There's a lot a people who drive the same car as you over there. 😀

perelli is a good brand or so i've heard, never had any experience with them. We've been running bfgoodrich on our trucks, around 110 each for the half-tread pattern, work great!
