I need mobo reccomendation

I want to get a new 64bit mobo, but not quite sure on what to get. I'm planning on getting a 2800/3000+ for it. I'm not much of an ocer and will be using my old ram (pc2700).

- I'm not gonna raid or use SATA
- AGP 8x, no pci-x cuz i will be using my 6800.
- dont care for on board nic or not
- on board audio preferable

price <= $140 or so, but i can go higher if it's worth the cause. also, i do not know whether to get a 754/939

plz help!

You're going 939. This is not open to negotiation. They all have onboard audio, don't they? I mean, I haven't heard of a recent motherboard that forces you to buy a discrete sound card.

But hmm... you're not going PCI-e? Got nothin then; someone more knowledgeable will be along to help you shortly. 🙂

NewEgg has the Gigabyte GA-K8NS-939 board for $90.

You can get a Socket 939 chip now, so you can re-use it if you decide to move to a PCI-E board later.

The GA-K8NS-939 has an 8X AGP slot for use with your current video card. It also has integrated sound and gigabit Ethernet.

There are Socket 754 boards available for less with similar features, but socket 939 is more "future proof." If you go socket 939, you'll have to go with a 3000+ or higher, the 2800+ isn't available in Socket 939.

i just looked on pricewatch for 939 processors and i see a regular 939 and a "90nm" one....what is the difference and are they interchangable?

All 3000-3500+'s in socket 939 are 90nm. Previous versions were 130nm socket 754, used more power, ran hotter, and were more expensive (smaller die size means a higher yield of processors, and lower cost per processor).

Not all 939's are 90nm, but in the price ranger you're looking for they are.

I am in the same boat as you OP. I was looking at 939 mb combo's from Monarch.
Retail $149 3000+ & $124 for the Asus A8V Deluxe and you get Napster, FarCry, and Half-Life 2 FREE. They also will load the latest bios. There might be other combo's you might like if not interested in the Asus.

that deal does sound awesome.

looks like $273 for mobo + proc + hl2 + farcry + napster (?)

since i already have hl2, i'd prolly sell that.

with the upgrades, i'll have

- the mobo (undecided)
- 3000+ retail
- 6800nu
- 1gb ram
- 52x cdrw
- tv tuner
- 2 HDs (160+60)
- nic

would an "eagle 400w" psu be able to handle this? ty
