I NEED MAJOR, MAJOR HELP w/ K7S5A mobo??

OK, I know the title is vague, but I do need help. Here are my issues:

Here is my setup:
ECS K7S5A w/ a 1.2 running @ 900 (100/100)
256MB Crucial pc133 dimm
40gb Maxtor (Primary Master)
72x Kenwood (Seconday Cable Select)
onboard sound and lan

My problems:

The first time I got this board, I tried to install XP on it and it failed miserably, it wouldnt go into the second stage of the install and my board would not run stable @ 133/133. So I took out my generic ram and it worked fine @ 133/133. So I tried installing XP on a blank drive (20gb). It got to where it began to copy the first set of files and gave me an error about not being able to copy a file and press enter to retry, well I guess it copied. So I get to the second stage of the install and then I got a BSOD about an IRQ problem. So I disabled onboard sound and it booted fine. But upon the second copying of files, I get an error about not being able to copy another file. I could see it when I browsed for it, but it couldnt copy. So I put in another copy of XP that I have and it seemed to continue ok, but until it finished the install and rebooted to go into XP, it kept rebooting on. Then I got a BSOD about a bad sys configuration. So I reboot, put in the cd and when asked press R to repair. Repair starts, asks me to press 1 and then my password and then it just goes to the dos prompt. I cant do anything from there. So I give up and shut it down and put 2k drive back in. Later on that night, I tried to copy a file from a cdr to my hard drive. My comp froze when it got to about 70% of the files copied. So I reboot and there are all the cdrom errors in the event viewer about a page fault. WHAT IS CAUSING THIS STUPID PROBLEM?? HOW CAN I INSTALL XP ON THIS DRIVE AND GET IT TO WORK? IS MY CDROM GOING BACK OR IS THE CABLE THAT IS CAUSE THE PROBLEMS? I had a rounded cable (ata100) and swapped it for a ATA66 plain cable. PLEASE HELP ME WITH THESE PROBLEMS.

Sorry for the long post.

what kind of power supply are u using?

before trying to install winXP, did win2k have any problems?

also read thru this link on oc workbench, it might help.

especially this part,

<< If I got it right, quite a lot of you have problem using DMA mode under W2k or WinXp (they keep reporting PIO 4)... This is a common issue of SiS chipsets ever since the 530 version. The solution is very simple.

All you have to do is use the SiS-provided utility SISIDE.EXE, which can be found on the driver CD (or downloaded either from ECS or SiS web site). This program enables DMA and after a reboot everything runs perfectly well!

I had the same problem with my new Barracuda ATA IV HDD, and now I run at full ATA 100 without any problems

When I installed 2k, I had no problems. Problems in 2k didnt start until I installed SP2 and I got atapi errors and it took 5 minutes to boot (cold or reboot). So I tok out my cdrw and set my cdrom to Cable Select and it booted faster.

I am using a FortronSource 300W with only a 3.3V setting of 16.0A.

I actually ran that program and it seemed to do NOTHING.

if, after trying the things reccomended on the ocworkbench.com faq and forums, you still cant get this mb to be stable. rma it. i went through 2 k7s5a mbs and both were unstable/bad. i ended up going to a shuttle ak31a and it's been running perfectly with the exact components that wouldnt work on the ecs mb. in my opinion, these mbs are much flakier than any othwers i've used.
good luck

Have you tried changing the memory timings? If they're to aggressive they can sometimes cause page faults. As to the AK31A V3.1, it's the KT266A chipset and is an inexpensive board(80$@Newegg.com) that's fast and has overclocking features. You can read the reviews of those who bought it Here.

this AK31A board,

how many IDE potential does it have? can it have more than two HDDs connected on the board? thx

Yeah. it has the usual 2 IDE slots which each support 2 IDE devices for a total of 4. If you need more you can always get a controller card. I'm expecting mine to be delivered later today, so I'll post my expierence with it on this thread if you'd like to hear what I think 🙂

linman,
the specs are quite good for general use and overclocking, anand did a review of kt266a based boards including this one.
kt266a roundup
you can get more info there than i can type.
my impressions of the board are that it's great, among the best if not the best mb that i have owned.

digme,
i've got 2 hds, 1 cdrw and 1 dvd hooked to mine right now, everything functioning perfectly. if i wanted mire, i'd add an ide card, like dapunisher says.

i highly reccomend this board to all, for what it's worth.

The reason I went with the ECS board was because it had pc133 DIMMS on it and also DDR DIMMS. If I would get another board, I would want pc133 because I can't afford to get 512MB DDR, but I can afford to get 512 pc133. I think I am going to take this computer to a computer shop and have them fix it up for me. Have them install XP for me and get it working. If you think I should get another board, LMK. Thanks to everyone for your help. But I still need more.
