Thanks For Reading this,
Ok I have A MSI K7T266 Pro2 MOB and I had the IDE'S setup like this #1 HDD master / Afreey CDROM slave
#2 Lite-on 24X CDRW Master /Pioneer 16X DVD slave

I just changed to a Lite-on DVD but I remover the cdrom and the Pioneer DVD
I setup #1 IDE HDD master / DVD slave
#2 CDRW by it self set to master
on BOOT up after the BIOS finds my drives I get "sec slave incompatible"
press F1 to continue"

Then it goes throught POST and boots Windows XP
I played a DVD and Bured a CD on the Fly
and every thing is ok
but whats wrong DVD and ATA 100 HDD can't be on the same IDE

I want to set this up with a Promise Ultra ATA/100 card
but I was nervous with my XP pro and all, that is my next install

I agree that installing the Promise card is the best solution.

The only reason I bought a RAID board for my last upgrade was for the 4 discrete IDE ports and elimination of any master/slave configurations. I coudn't care less about ATA133 or implementing any RAID mode.

Hope this helps!

what harddrive are you using? some drives need the jumpers set different for an ata vs non ata slave

but the thing is your harddrive would be better off being alone (without a slave)

personally i would set it up as hdd primary master, cdrw secondary master, dvd secondary slave

Yes I know that the HDD is better with out a slave but I burn a lot of CD on the fly , if I get the INFO ON installing the ATA card with XP and I get the b#lls to try they will all have an IDE alone

Um... the info on installing a Promise card is: Open box, plug card into PCI slot. I'm running a Promise 100 controller in XP and it automatically detects the card and installs drivers for it! It's the easiest installation ever!

Btw, it's better to have the HD alone or with similar speeds because with IDE drives as master/slave, the two run at the slowest speed between the two. Example: if you HD is ATA/100 and your DVD drive is ATA/33 then both drives as master/slave will run at ATA/33.

Incorrect:
Today's ide controllers can handle different transfer rates on the same ide channel. In your example, the HD will "run" at ATA100 and your DVD drive will "run" at ATA33, its been this way for some time now FYI.
