I need advice as to what area to stay in Maui as well as any good hotels you would recommend. Excluding the four seasons and any other that are $400+ a night.

May want to post how much you are willing to spend and when you are travelling (or the options you can travel). Like this weekend I bet there is no room below $400 at any hotel even if you had booked ahead.

your best bet will be expedia.com. I have compared orbitz, travelocity, expedia, united vacations, and a few others and expedia is always cheapest.

Aston at Papakea Resort - $276/night - 4 star.

Castle Maui Beach Hotel - $84/night - 3 star

I stayed at one of the Papakea Resort places... Really nice. I don't think it was Aston at Papakea Resort. Expensive, though.

We rented a Condo in Kaanapali some years and and loved it.

Take a look here for area and rate comparisons.

I ended up booking the Westin Maui on Kaanapali beach. All the reviews I read said the resort is top notch. I bought an Canon S400 with the underwater housing. I hope to get some good pics.

Oh if you have an idea of where you want to stay, try getting a better rate at http://www.hotwire.com

It helps if you know the rating (3 star, etc) of the hotel you're staying at, it gives you a better chance of guessing what the hotwire rate is for.

I got a 2 night stay @ Hotel Del in Coronado / San Diego for $160 a night instead of the usual $300+ they charge.

We rented one there also and it was so nice, a bit on the expensive side but it was worth it.
