I want to use my dads old pc as a file server. I can get 2 more hd's to stick in there and use it to store my music and my dvds i convert to divx. I think I want to do a jbod setup and combine two of the drives and use it as shared storage and leave the third one unshared and use it for the OS...how do i set this up? also, 2.0 ghz celeron and 512 mb of pc133 memory should be enough for this right?
Its a windows xp machine, but it has all sorts of problems...spyware, viruses, you name it...so I think I would like to completly reformat it and perhaps use linux on it. I never had the chance to use linux, but this seems like a good chance to try it out.
Also, I would like to make it so that there are two levels of access to the server. I want one to be able to have full control of the contents that are shared...add, move, delete etc...and i want the other just to be able to use the stuff and copy it to their computer. This way, I can have full control over it and others on my network can access the drive and download the files to thier computers but not change anything on it. I'm not sure how to set this up, so I would really appreciate any input...thanks in advance
