Hi!

Several months earlier, I wanted to buy a new computer but I forgot the idea. Now, the idea is back in my memory and I'm totally lost due to the amount of new stuff that has been released since.

I wanted a computer that could run games higher than 1024*768/1152*864 with good framerate. Games like Battlefield 2, Half-Life 2, AOE 3, FIA GTR Racing, GTA: SA, ...

I had a budget of about $1100 USD (for the tower only, no monitor) -- and I live in Canada.

I'm totally lost in several parts:

CPU : I was a big fan of Athlon 64, and still is. I was going to buy a 3000+ or a 3200+. Are they, as of now, good choices? If yes, which core (it's here that I'm lost)? Winchester, Venice, blah blah blah?

Video : Here also. I didn't know what to take betweek a 6600 GT PCI-E or a X800XL. It was a question of budget. Now, the price of the two have dropped. I'm still undone. Now there's the X800 GT not that expensive, the 6800 GT and X800 XL too... I'm lost. Can someone give me the best bang-for-the-buck here (but that can play games at good resolution and good FPS)?

Mobo : I don't know. MSI K8N Neo 4? Asus A8N ? I'm lost. The MSI looks good but a lot of people are complaining... Which one is the best (and not too expensive)?

Hard Drive : Since the price have dropped, I'll probably take a 200 GB or a 250 GB, but from which brand? Seagate? Maxtor? WD?

Memory : Big deal here. It's obvious that I'll need 1 GB of RAM, but what RAM? DDR 400? DDR 2? Back then, the DDR2 was not a good option, but is it one now?

Case : I just want a good case, reliable, with a powersupply included (400W if possible).

I hope you can help me
Thank you!

CPU - The Venice AMD's are the better choice, their the newest cores (manufactured better, less power consumption, less heat), a 3200+ is a very good processor, but if you have the money and dont want to overclock, id reccomend a 3500+ (2.2GHz)

Video Card - the X800XL and the 6800GT are almost the same exact cards performance wise. Where one wins in one game, the other wins in another game (seriously, if averaged, theyd be tied in performance). But since the X800XL is cheaper, id reccomend it (it will run flawlessly at 1024x768)

Mobo - Go with the Asus, they are a very reliable/stable motherboard maker

Hard Drive - Get a Seagate, best warranty, awesome reliability. Seagate

Memory - With your budget and build, stick with DDR400. DDR2 is still not mainstream enough to justify getting it. I would also reccomend (if you have extra money) looking into getting 2GB (only $170-$200 for good stuff like OCZ). If not, 1GB will be fine

Case - Get any Antec case, as thier the only powersupplies i would trust that comes with a case. The antec P180 is a very good case.
****BE FORWARNED****
ALMOST 90% of all power supplies that come with a case are crap and will die within a year. It is highly reccomended you dish out the extra money for a GOOD, RELIABLE power supply (Enermax, Antec, CoolerMaster, Xclio, Fortron, Seasonic, Thermaltake (iffy, but for your build there ok))

There's room in your budget for one of nVidia's new cards - the 7800GT is going for ~$400 right now. I'd stay away from Thermaltake power supplies.

Thermaltake PSU's arent that bad, and if he was planning on using one from a case, its a whole hell of a lot better

also, for what he wants to run (1024x768), 7800GT is a complete waste of money, he could use the $150 hed save and get an extra 1GB of Memory.

Yeah, that's what I thought.
I'll probably get a 3200+ or a 3500+, depending on my budget.
L'll probably get a X800 XL. Was my first choice, still my favorite.
So, you think the ASUS A8N-E is the best bang for the buck?

As for the case, Antec was also my first choice.. but this P180 is new to me (I was used to Sonata). Speaking of Sonata, take a look at this: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?...5422&vpn=SONATA%20II&manufacture=ANTEC Honestly, do you think the Sonata is a good case for this rig?

Finally, for the Memory, which brand is better? Is value RAM (from brands like Corsair or OCZ) good or do I need to take big-expensive-RAM? Finally, 1X 1GB or 2X 512 MB ?

Thank you

The P180 is the best case out right now for performance and quietness

And the Asus is the best bang for buck mobo, and its rock solid also

YOU ABSOLUTELY DO NOT NEED TO WASTE MONEY ON EXPENSIVE RAM.
Get ValueRAM, it offers the same performance (gaming wise) as higher end expensive RAM

Yeah, for the Asus, I read some reviews and you're right.

For the RAM, do you think Samsung DDR 400 can do the job? And : One stick of 1 GB or 2 sticks of 512 MB??

Finally, I like the P180 but it seems a little bit out of my budget (around $1000 US). It's expensive + I need to buy a $50-$100 PSU. I'm not so sure.. unless I can find a good and cheap PSU.

Do you think a 3200+, with 1 GB of DDR 400 and a X800 XL will be able to run games like Half-Life 2, Battlefield 2, FEAR, Call of Duty 2, Quake 4 at high resolution (1152X864 and higher) with a good framerate? Cause, the thing is that I don't wanna upgrade this computer every six months (I can't afford that). So I want something that can last at least a year (running game smoothly) before I upgrade it.

For the power supply, do you think I need more than 400W? Is 380W enough?
For the RAM, can the Samsung one do the job? Also, 1 stick of 1 GB or 2 sticks of 512 MB (Dual Channel)?
I think I'll wait a probably get a 3500+, or a 3700+ if I have the money. Is it worth it? (Between the 3200+ and the 3700+, there is a gap of $140 CAD)

Finally, I can have a Maxtor 200 GB DiamondMax 10 SATA for the price of a Seagate Barracuda 160 GB SATA. Which one should I take?

Is the Antec Sonata II with 450W PSU a good case?

Now, what's the best bang for the buck: Athlon 64 3200+, 3500+ or 3700+ (San Diego)?

I have found a very cheap Connect 3D X800 XL 256 MB PCI-Express. Is the Connect 3D a good video card (good OC', not noisy, low temperature, ....)?

To start, A couple of comments:
1. also, for what he wants to run (1024x768), 7800GT is a complete waste of money
Umm did you misread? -->I wanted a computer that could run games higher than 1024*768/1152*864 with good framerate
2.. DDR2 is still not mainstream enough to justify getting it.
Again ummm, since when did AMD start using DDR2 for its current processor line?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good choices on the case and mobo.
HDD can be found for 109.99 easily.
Decent price on the memory but I havn't really had any experience with Samsung memory... Lifetime warentee?

For a Proc it's an interesting decision:
Will you be overclocking?
Personally I own a 3200+ and a 3500+ both run great, but I don't see a huge difference in terms of FPS. FPS is more the realm of the vid card at resolutions like 1600X1200 not so much the processor.

SO:
Antec Sonata II :135
ASUS A8N-E : 146
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 : 110
Samsung 1 GB DDR400 (single stick?): 148

AMD A64 3200+ :$225

So far we are at 764 CDN without taxes

That leaves us with 611 bucks.

Now we can strech your buget a bit and go with a 7800gt for 559.99 764+560= 1324 before tax when your buget is approx 1375. So 1324*1.07 = ~ 1416.68 A little over your buget.
OR
We can stick with a 6800gt//X800XL

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2406&p=3
Here shows the performance difference of the X800XL vs 6800gt
Goes back and forth...
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2496&p=3
X800XL vs the 7800gt
You'll notice is disappears for Doom 3/Everquest/HL2 as is can't compete at the higher resolutions.

If you like HL2, the game is optimized for ATI cards so I'm pretty sure a X800XL will beat a 6800GT. But the 7800gt beats em both in all games easily at the higher res.

Anyway back to work now.

Thank you :p

- For the memory, yes, it is a single stick. 2X512 is less expensive (about $110 CAD) but it takes one more memory slot. The Samsung one, was the cheapest that I found, and as far as I know, Samsung is not new in the RAM market.
- Also, I'm not a big overclocker. I'm more of a casual guy. I just want my stuff to work correctly. If I need more juice, then I'll overclock - like a "last resort".

So, you think I should take the 3200+ ?

Now, concerning the GPU, it's hard for me to tell at what resolution I'll play. I've never had a good GPU (I'm stuck with a TNT 2 right now) but usually, I play at 1024*768 and higher. I'm not a big fan of AA and AF; I'd rather have a higher resolution, but I'm not the guy that wants to play everything at 1600*1200 at Extra High Details with 60+ FPS.

I'd love to have the 7800 GT, but it's out of my budget. It's between the X800 XL and the 6800 GT. I can't find a PCI-Express 6800 GT below $375 CAD ; I've found a Connect 3D X800 XL 256 MB PCI-E for $270 CAD.

My question: How good will I run games like Battlefield 2, CoD 2, AOE 3 and FEAR with this computer (with a X800XL)?

The only thing is that you will lose the benifits of dual channel memory by going with a single 1 gig stick.

----------------------

As you saw In BF2 the X800XL out-performs the 6800gt.

As for the other games u mention I'm not sure, but my guess would be that they are back and forth between the 2 cards.

But I've never heard of Connect as a Graphics card makers so their product could be substandard. Cheaper isn't nessesarily the best way to go.

Anyway hope that helps.

Connect 3D is a long-time ATI Maker... anyway :)

So, I think I'll go with the X800 XL. One more thing : Pixel Shader 3.0. Big issue for the X800 XL? Big advantage for the GeForce 6800 GT?

I thought that Dual Channel was only good on Intel's P4? So, there is really a boost if I take 2X512 MB DDR 400, instead of 1X 1 GB?

lol fair enough, I just havn't seen one of their cards in my local haunts.

As far as I know Pixel Shader 3.0 right now is in very few games. But I think that as time goes on the 6800gt will probally be a more future proof card because it has pixel shader 3.0. The question is will we see alot of games that the 6800gt can take advantage of the PS 3.0 in its lifetime.

I don't know

Dual channel was not supported on the 754 boards but is on the nf4 939 boards.
I've hear conflicting reviews on the benifits of dual channel. Mabye someone who knows more can help out here? Personally I run dual channel.

Okay. But, I mean, Pixel Shader 3.0 isn't enough to justify the $100 USD gap between the two cards, right?

Unless he wants to go 1600 or so with resolution, theres no reason to get the 7800GT now, mine as well use the money and get a better CPU or 2GB of RAM

and about the DDR2, what are you trying to imply?
What you asked, is what i was stating, DDR2 isnt maintsream enough to even think about getting it. Its the truth, so whats wrong with that statement? Mainstream would mean that its becoming the standard, which it isnt, but it is available to buy so it is in the market, just not highly supported (like x64 windows, its not maintsream enough to care about buying it over PRO, but since thier the same price it doesnt matter)
I KNOW AMD doesnt incorporate DDR2 into its processors yet, which is why i said its NOT maintsream.
Honestly, think it over before you post

I guess its cool to post worthless comments that try to critique accurate ones

Excuse me?
Saying that something isn't mainstream implys that it is an option.
So there is something wrong with saying that DDR2 isn't mainstream for AMD processors because u CAN'T use DDR2. You can't think about getting it because it doesn't exist yet for AMD. Oh and DDR2 is actually becomming the standard, it just isn't yet, thus becomming! Mainstream does not mean standard.... It isn't availible to buy for AMD so it isn't in the market.

AMD has already announced that it will be using DDR2, therefore with Intel and AMD migrating their platforms to DDR2 it is becomming mainstream.

By your own example with windows x64 and windows xp you prove you have no idea what you are talking about. There is no availibility of DDR2 for amd, it isn't supported, it isn't like the windows situation at all. If you knew that DDR2 isn't supported by AMD, why wouldn't you make sure that he knew that?

How about next time before you post and give advice, you know what you are talking about?? hmmm??

but it is available to buy so it is in the market, just not highly supported (like x64 windows, its not maintsream enough to care about buying it over PRO, but since thier the same price it doesnt matter)

Oh and last but not least:
He didn't specify what resolution he wanted to play at except that he wanted higher then 1024*768/1152*864. You went ahead and said that at (1024X768) it isn't worth it. Correct!! Congrats!!!! but who cares? He said he wanted to run the games at a higher resolution then that. Thats why I linked him (providing useful information based on the facts) to Anandtech's comparison of different games that Included a X800XL and a 7800gt at different resoultions.

I am well aware AMD processors dont support DDR2, but im addressing the whole fact, that DDR2 does exsist, its just not mainstream (ie, its not available for most builds, ie its not the route to go yet)

You keep referring to the fact that AMD doesnt support DDR2, thanks, i know that, repeating it wont do anything.
Im referring in terms of where it stands on the market, and where it will be standing soon, which is its not anywhere near the standard for computers (even when AMD releases DDR2 supported CPU's it wont be standard, as 99% of computer users will still be using DDR) so that its not an option.
Slow down, take a breath, dont get worked up. I didnt know i had to be specific, when being general works to (mainstream = the standard = compatible with most things, which DDR2 is not, which is what i have already said)

second, about the resolutions, there was no need to psot a comparison, as he was either going to get a 6800GT or X800XL, which (as i said) either is the perfect choice and perform the same, so he mine as well get the X800XL to save money.
My comment on the 7800GT was simple enough, its a waste of money for him. PERIOD.

Okay. Hmmmm, about the CPU. I'm still hesitating between the 3200+, the 3500+ and the 3700+. I'm not a big overclocker (not a big freak with liquid nitrogen), but I would like to get some additional juice out of the CPU. I just want to best bang for the buck, best quality/price ratio.

3200+ = 220-240 CAD
3500+ = 260-290 CAD
3700+ = 330-370 CAD

PS: If I overclock, do I need better RAM? Is it good with Value RAM DDR 400?

3200+ = 220-240 CAD
3500+ = 260-290 CAD
3700+ = 330-370 CAD

PS: If I overclock, do I need better RAM? Is it good with Value RAM DDR 400?

Get the 3500+.

Thats what i got over the 3700+ and 3200+, not only does it offer 2.2GHz to fall back on if you cant/wont overclock, but it does a fairly decent job of overclocking as well.

Also, ValueRAM will do fine with overclocking, as you can just use a divider (in the BIOS). Its a lot better then spending money on needless RAM with fast timings

Finally something I can agree with, we could agrue about that other cr@p all day and get no where so I'm just dropping it.

If you have the little bit of extra money (which u do in the buget you gave us) then so 3500+ If you want something that will run em great, but save u some money go 3200+.

Also, Value Ram.... Don't waste money on expensive ram on your buget.
