I have a problem..
Im trying to update all of my pc's that i have here at home, (3 of them) and i have just bought a new game, Grand Theft Auto : Vice City. It tells me it requires, Service pack 1 when using xp.
Now there i am trying to update windows xp over A 56K MODEM and its trying to download nearly 50mbs.. it tells me that it will require 190 minutes to download this one file, for one of my pc's.
this is the annoying part. I only have a 2 hour connection time, thanks to my ISP and my connection speed normally goes up to or about 40kbps, which is ok for a modem around where i live in england.. but trying to download 50mbs in 2 hours is in one word, impossible and it cant be done.
is there any other places on the web that i might be able to use a program like getright or something so i can download service pack one and then just copy it over the network i have here or do i have to download it for all 3 pcs separately?
i really need someones help on this, as without service pack 1, i cant play this game and im not sure whether or not it will come on the cd.. someone please help!!
for example, a 1.92mb file when im connected at 41.2kbps takes 10 minutes and 40 secs averaging 3.07kb/sec...
someone please help me out here!!!

Use getright to get it and then copy it over the network..... Or you could order a cd from microsoft.

Well in that case. Plan a two day project after setting getright up to download the service pack and make sure that getright is set to reconnect when it is disconnected. There was a time long.... long... ago.... when I would download all 600 mb of a linux ISO on my 56k connection.... Ahhhhh those were the days.... :p

well i simply wont do it.. it takes to long and it just such a waste of time.. plus my gf would get annoyed with me using the phone line all the time, this is why i have been saying i need broadband.. it keeps the phone line free and takes 1/10 of the time to do anything.. man i wish i had it!!
shame really cos if i lived about .5 mile or so towards where i used to live, i would be able to get it.. hopefully when they up the db to 60 (whatever that means) i will be able to get it.. if not im going to go mental!!

Mate, go buy a copy of PC Pro or PC Plus, they both usually have WinXP SP1 on the cover CD though check in the mag to make sure!

Cheers.

All you need is a download manager program like GetRight or DAP,you can get free version of DAP from here .

Next you can download WinXP SP 1 with one of those download manager programs from here (btw I`ve tested it with GetRight and it does work).

All you need to do is pause DAP or GetRight near the 2hrs time limit for your ISP ,reconnect and select resume with DAP or GetRight and carry on the same way until it`s all downloaded ;).

thanks mate!!
i have already looked at doing it that way.. as im back to work tonight i might get the girl friend to keep an eye to it.. thats if she doesnt mind!!
i think it will take at least 11hours.. i will do a clock this download to see how long it thinks it will take.. hopefully less than 24hours!!
ps it said it would take 10.5 hours to download at a connection speed of 30k... not good!! give me broadband!!!

The one guy "Cheers" is right... Those magazines have SP1 discs in them all the time and they are magazines from the UK! I would order the disk if you can't get it with one of the magazines because you don't want to go through this every time you need to install do you? If you need it immediately, set everything up so it will reconnect automatically and just let it do it at night while you sleep.

well as i work nights i might find it difficult to do anything!! plus we have been having problems with the dial up.. its not been working well at all.. plus instead of worrying about downloading it through a 56k modem, a mate at work is downloading it for me today and someone else that i dont know through another forum has offered to download it and send it too me!! :Q

@ Mem - I tried the link and the site download, but it came up with nothing.. it said something about a url error.. i have no idea what it was going on about, but i really wasnt in the mood for downloading something so big with a 56k modem.. sod it!!! besides, nice people online do it for you!!! ;)

LOL! You make it sound like its impossible to get decent net connections in the UK! I'm running a 600k NTL connection which downloads around 70-80Kb/sec, I could upgrade to the 1Mb connection but what's the point?

Did you consider looking in the magazine as I suggested for the SP??

well, sadly thats not really an option.. see around here the house prices are through the roof, im taking £100,000 + for a 2 bedroom flat in some places and in others possibly double that. now for a 3 bedroom house, you are looking at £150,000 at least, so its really a real sodding annoyance, as i cant move!! believe me, i would if i could!!
although bt are saying about upping the db on the line from 55 to 60 so, hopefully with that in mind, i should be able to get it and when i have a good enough job to keep it (i hate the one im in, 12 hours a day, 5 days a week :( night shift work, 7pm till 7am )
oh if you get 125k what speed connection do you have????? jeesss.... i wish i lived in broadband area :(

i will point out this simple problem with england..
down in the south west (ie where i live) hardly anyone knows that we are there.. for example, a few years back i was coming home from my ex's in london and i had to go round and about because the M25 was 4 ft deep in water.. i asked where the hell do i go to a POLICEMAN and he said, wheres that? how sad is that? christ...

its fine for people that live near or in citys, exeter, bristol, london, manchester, birmingham etc areas, but when you live in a small little village called northam, what can you get? in a few words, sod all.
theres no cable down here, broadband i cant get because my phone line is to far away (i think less than 0.5 of a mile) and theres no way im paying however much for a satilite connection..

if i could get a 1mb connection, it would make more of a point for me to get it as i would be upgrading from a 56k modem, if you would upgrade to it, there would be little difference to you really because you already have a fast connection..
if you dont mind me asking, how much do you pay per month for the NTL cable connection? for a 56k modem connection, my girl friend and i are paying about £13 a month for any time access, for broadband from BT, AOL, Boltblue its about £28 a month, but im not sure what it is for a 1mb connection, normally through the roof, because of it being a 'company' thing rather than a home use..
