I need help with the booting part of my comuter

Hi, I have a question regarding the way my Windows boots up. When my computer starts and it goes to boot up windows, it gives me an option to boot which OS I choose to. Howver the first option, I guess default option, is a dead path, the computer won't boot due to some missing file. The second option boots up perfect (Windows XP) and I want that to be my default option to boot, and erase the first option altogether. Can someone shed some light on how to accomplish this? Much appreciated.
