I need help with my network

Ok this is my story. My network was hooked up and everything was working fine. Then one day it stopped working and I directly connected my computer to the modem. Now I want my network to work, but it doesn't want to go online :/

I have everything hooked up properly. I don't have anything crazy (like servers) on my network. All I have right now is one computer (and another one real soon) on it. The firmware is updated, and at this point I don't know what to do.

Should I completely reset it and work from there? I haven't done anything real big or crazy on the router (other port forwarding).

Appreciate any help, thanks.

I am confused as to the purpose of have a network with one computer on it? I would say since at this point it needs work to start over completely once the other computer enters the situation. I may be missing something in the bigger picture of what your asking because I am not even close to a pro when it comes to home networks.

I have one computer hooked on to it by ethernet, another also by ethernet, and a laptop I'll be using with the wireless.

What router are you using? If it not working I would reset it to factory setting then add the tweaks to the settings you were using for starters.

It's a dlink di634m

I want to reset it but I'm not sure what settings I'd have to put in if I did do that

Good idea to write all your network settings down as you add them make for much easier for when you need to do a reset. Does this website show your routers settings? I was looking for a manual but this seem like it can help too.

yeah I really should have wrote down my settings. Thing is I bought the router because on the box it says lifetime warranty with lifetime tech support. I checked out the website and it says all service is done for the product... (called to confirm to)

I'm not sure which website you're speaking of.. the default router page? yeah I guess it does have my settings (and I definitely see stuff filled out). And as for the manual, are you talking about the manual that came with the router? I lost that a while back :/

Do you have a cablemodem?
Try unplugging the cablemodem for a few minutes. Might as well unplug the router as well.
Then start the power-cycling (the cablemodem or even DSL modem thinks its still attached to your PC)

Once the modem syncs up, plug your router back in and see if it works.

So what happening with your network now with the router in place? Do you know how to setup router for your network or was it just being used and was working then not working? Do you know how to setup DHCP? Can you see your 2 connections wired and wireless?

Well back like 8 months ago when it was working, yeah I called dlink and everything was setup for the router (called tech support and they helped).

I don't know how to setup DHCP, and I can see only one connection on the computer (by the lights) because I have it hooked up there. I haven't hooked up the second computer yet and I haven't tried it on wireless.

I have a dsl connection from verizon and I don't know if this would be a problem, but I completelty reformatted the harddrive because there was spyware.

thanks

So I am assuming you connected the cable modem to the correct port on your router and you cant connect to the internet currently?

I'm using Windows XP

Yeah the DHCP server is enabled

and

Static DHCP allows the DHCP server to assign a fixed IP address to a specific MAC address

That's enabled to

When you look at your DHCP settings what info does it show for your Dynamic DHCP Client List? Does it list your workgroup computer name and assigned IP address?

No.. it says this

Dynamic DHCP Client List
Computer Name IP Address MAC Address Expire Time
kdslaptop 192.168.0X.xxx **:**:**:**:**:** 20 Hours 52 Minutes

Don't know what kdslaptop is.. might be the laptop but I don't recall ever giving it that name. But yeah I guess this computer isn't on there

Are you using the interface from your router or are you giving me info from the emulator which looks like its from the emulator? Do you know how to bring up the router interface up in your web browser?

I just found a website has good info on router. It also has links to manual and spec sheet and user comments mentioning the fact that the router is had to setup after it lost it settings so that maybe what happening to you. From the info I read so far you want to make sure your modem is plugged into the WAN port to work properly. What I recommend to be starting with a clean slate is unplug your router and cable modem after you done a reset on modem by holding in reset button for more than 10 sec. Then power up your cable mode until the activity lights have gone through there diagnostics. If you dont know when the modem is ready then just waits 1 min after powering up the modem and if modem is working ok you should ready to power up your router. After 30 sec you can power up your computer and see if you connect to the internet. If not see if you can access the setting for the router by
typing in the IP Address of the Router (http://192.168.0.1).

here the info page with links

I was giving you info from the emulator because I thought it had all the info from my router. The only way I can get to the router page is typing 192.168.0.1 after I have the computer connected to the router (so I thought the emulator gave me the page without me having to hook up my comp to the router)

so what you're telling me is to first reset the modem, then the router, then unplug modem/router, then re-plug them and follow the stuff on the page?

I'm worried about resetting the dsl modem.. because if I do reset it and the router doesn't work, then I'm not sure the modem will work..

the modem doesnt need a reset the router does so I know it in a factory setup. You should press and reset the router for 10sec first before you resetup your network. Then with everything unplugged do the modem -router - computer as per my previous post

Best to RESET the ROUTER without it connected to computer or modem

Hmm interesting I reset the router and the internet is working

I think I remember doing this before and ended up calling D-Link because it failed to connect like two months later. I think I had to do something like put in my ip or something on the router. So my question is will it work like this for a while, or will I have to put my setup info later?

thanks alot for all the help :):)

Congrats on getting your network working again.

You should be ok now for your wired connections and if it stops working then you can repeat the reset and reconnect setup.
I don't know how you want to setup your wireless security but this link has your manual so I suggest you read it and go for the most secure setting you can.
Your welcome glad we got it fixed for ya. :)
