I need help understanding file system of win7

So I had windows vista installed before, and I did an install of windows7 over the windows vista.
Vista was put into windows.old folder in which I cut and pasted all my old stuff into my new win7 installation. Fast forward a few days, I see everything that was in the windows.old folder is still in there. So it looks like two copies of the same thing on my hard disk, only that when I change a filename in one folder, the change happens in the other folder too!

And now I can't even delete my old windows.old folder as it says access is denied. I've taken ownership and deleted all the user permissions but mine, and set it to full control. It still won't let me delete it.

I miss the days of xp when everything was straight forward.

Maybe that's there for the easy transfer tool? Possibly if you used that instead of just copying everything over, it would delete it, or let you delete it.

yup sorta like linux hard/soft links. like super sortcuts for files. useful if you need to move a file or directory to another drive, the programs you use would totally freak out if they didn't find those files in their original locations. these links trick those programs..they look and behave like the real thing to them unlike old shortcuts. theres a tool that creates links in xp as well from ms if you look for it. i've not bothered with it though.
