celeron processor, socket 478

I was changing the processor from a mother board to a new one I just bought. When i pulled out the heatsink the cpu came stuck on it! I cant seem to take it off it seems stuck there with some kind of glue (is this possible?!!) is there a way to get it on the new motherboard without screwing up the CPU??

I dont want to bend the pins, is it dangerous to just push it in?

Thanks

yes, i've seen heatsinks that have been epoxied directly to the cpu.. seems to be common among some OEMs.

You can just pop it off with a flat headed screwdriver, the original builder probably used good ol' silicone paste which dried out and created a vacuum seal between the CPU's heatspreader and the heatsink. I've seen an old ~500MHz Socket 370 Celeron stuck to a heatsink in much the same fashion because the thermal paste dried like an epoxy.

The same thing happened to one of my friends (Socket 478 P4 too). A tiny paring knife popped the CPU off just fine. However, there were pins bent since the CPU was basically ripped (or fell) out of the socket...

computers SO much faster with 512 megs of ram and a good motherboard :D too bad its not 'mine' and its a clients :( oh well. $$$ :p
