I need help too, guys (98SE)

This sounds nuts, but here goes.

In mid July I built a Piii 1 gig machine. Asus CUSL2 motherboard.

I installed Win 98SE and all went well. It found my hardware, I installed the CUSL software and the machine ran flawlessly.

Like an idiot I formatted the drive and installed Me and once again the hardware was found and it ran fine.

Not being real happy with Me for other reasons, I formatted the drive today and reinstalled 98SE.

Now the problem(s).

First, it won't find the modem but even worse than that it finds three things and asks for the software for it: 1) PCI Serial Controller 2) PCI System Management 3) Unknown Device.

I physically removed the modem and it still found that unknown device.

Now here's the point: I Never opened the case since the day the computer was built with the exception of taking out the modem today

Question is where is the software for the first two items? SE wants me to browse to the location but I have no idea where to point it. As far as the unknown device is concerned I'm lost.

The only thing on the motherboard is a USR non winmodem and Soundblaster Live! value.

Can anybody help?

Any question... please ask.

This may not be an exact solution for your problem but might give you some directions.

When windows asks you to browse to a location, click on "detail" button. That should give you some information like what .cab file it is looking for and where it wants to put the target file including the source path it was looking at. Then search for the file using windows start|find and point to the file location or if you do not have a copy of the file locally see if you can download it or get it from another win98se PC.

Did you also try pointing to the usual locations like, windows, windows\system, windows\system32, ...drivers etc?

I am suprised you are having this problem with a fresh install and that too after formatting. May be somebody has a better solution till then...
