I need help setting up QOS

I just bought a linksys router for the QOS option. I download files with UTorrent and it slows down my internet surfing. I spent 2 hours on chat support w/linksys, even with a superviser and it didnt go far. Apparently the issue is PORTS. I want to give internet explorer priority, but they said IE does not use ports to access the internet so you cannot assign priority. Can someone help me set this up? Im thinking of getting the port that UTorrent uses and set that to low priority. The UTorrent FAQ said that it uses a range of ports, querying them from low to high until it finds a good one. the first port is 6881 the last is 6999. The chat help supervisor said to just give the 1st port 6881 low priority, and it doesnt seem to be working too well.

Does IE8 use a port to access the internet? Can someone help me with this?

THANX

uTorrent doesn't have a default port. It assigns a random port. You can also change this port. It is very likely that 6881 is not the port in use. Go to Options and then preferences in utorrent. Under connection look at the box that says port used for incoming connections. This is the port it uses.

Also if utorrent slows down your internet, you should really limit the max upload and download speeds to 80% of the maximum value. So if your upload is 100 KB/s maximum, set it to 80 KB/s. Limit the download a little too. Play with the settings and see what works for you. To do this at the bottom right in the utorrent window right click on the part that says U : 0.2 kB/s T: ( this is for upload). The box to the left of that that says D : 0.2 KB/s is the download do the same for that.

utorrent can also slow down your interent because of interfering programs running on your computer. An old version of nod32 (I think version 3) needs an option changed or else it will make your internet unresponsive. There are also other programs, a list is on the utorrent website or forum.

IE8 does not use a specific port. Port 80 is the port webservers listen on for data from your computer. This port is only for webservers, not for people like you trying to connect to the webserver. Web browsers use a range of random ports. The port your web browser will use to connect to a webserver is not port 80. You should just set the priority of utorrent low. You can't set the priority of web browsing I believe.

If you need more specific information on where to set these options, posting your router model and stuff would be useful. Hope this helped. Also I am not sure about your router, but some routers only do QoS on the upload side, but not the download side.

Unfortunately the port you're mentioning "6881" is for incoming connections and has nothing to do with outgoing. Outgoing is the only thing you can prioritize. Torrent peers will use random listening ports. Webservers normally listin on port 80. Port based QoS uses the destination Ports in a connection. When you go to a website you are (for a lack of a better term) destined for that address and port. If you set up your QoS to prioritize Port 80 higher than the ‘default’ you should see an improvement.

ImDonly1 is wrong to say you can’t prioritize Port 80. You completely can, what you cannot do is prioritize Torrent traffic. Its Port Destinations are too random for QoS to adequately prioritize.

However this is still dependant on your torrent settings. Each peer connection is placed into the memory of the router. If you have too many connections you will not be able to create a new connection no matter what it is. So make sure you cut back a little on the number of peers and active downloads you’ve got going.

Nuwave is correct, in your QOS settings, set port 80 as the highest priority and your web traffic will always work correctly no matter what else is going on - if the QOS is working correctly. What model of Linksys do you have? I know models that support DDWRT or Tomato, if you flash them with this firmware, the QOS in these work quite well. You could also set the utorrent port as lowest priority too but generally speaking, just set port 80 as highest priority and you should be set
