hey , i need help i got a new mobo and cpu, i boot up and the cpu speed is 800mhz, after a lot of work and trying i got my cpu at 2.0ghz but thats default and i got a mobile to oc it to 2.4 ghzor 2.5ghz, well i hope you can help me maybe i have something that is limiting my oc capabilities.

mobo: asus a7n8x-e deluxe bios: 1008
cpu: amd athlon 2.6 mobile working at fsb 166x12 fan: thermaltake 12 extreme ed artic silver 5
ram: kingstom 512mb pc 2100
one 120gb ata 133 maxtor hdd and a seagate 160gb ata 100 hdd
i have a 500w power supply it has 2 fans all voltages are default
case: chemming aluminum with 5 fans, 2 front 2 back one over the v. card(on the side of the case)

mu cpu at full charge is at 38 C

well thats it if you need anymore info let me know help will be really preciated

that seems a bit warm for your current speed, also your ram is going to hold you back, i'm surprised you got 166 out of it. it must be really nice 266 ram. your very vague in the information you gave, what kind of voltages are you running? try boosting the core to 1.7volts.

there are LOTS of mobile barton threads repeating the same things over and over again, feel free to roam about and find some answers on your own.

you'll definately need better ram, i think that board only has multipliers up to 12.5, which means you'd need ram that can run at the 200fsb, so u can do something like 12x200 = 2400...

As far as the heat goes tho, that doesnt seem too bad for 2ghz at full charge - load?

especially since its summer which means higher general temps

the mobo has multipliers up to 16x also im using default voltages(1.6000v), i updated the bios to 1011. i got this info using cpu-z
my temps are 37°c at full use of the cpu, 20°c on the hdd and the mobo 16°c and 18°c

i upped the cpu core to 1.68v now im runing at 175*12.5=2187.5mhz but my ram now changed from 133mhz to 140mhz couse of the fsb:mem ratio 5:4 right now is this bad or good?

my temp at full cpu charge is 40°c

Your RAM is holding you back a lot. Buy new 3200 RAM and your performance could go up 20-30%.

for now just keep your memory to fsb ratio at 1:1 and run the x16 multiplier and fsb as high as you can while keeping it stable. that should get to about 2.2ghz still and be faster than the 175*12.5 with the fsb out of sync with the memory. but in the long run, defenatly swap out the pc2100 for some pc3200 or better.

Given that I don't know from where you are starting (like I tried this and it worked, or here is my bios settings: CPU-Interface Enabled, vdd at 1.6v, blah blah blah), for those numbers you will definitely want more vCore. I don't know of anyone running 2500Mhz at 1.7v. More like 1.85v or 1.9v then try back off from there.

Many folks I know of are perfectly stable at 200x12@~1.65v actual.

Good luck, and feel free to provide more info. The more info the better (usually! :)) the help.

2.5ghz at 1.7v would be a miracle short of something better than air cooling. You're going to need around 1.775v for 200x12.5, minimum. Give it a whirl.

First... it's not a 2.6 anything. The only reason I'm pointing that out is because some people STILL get the idea that an XP2600 is a 2.6 GHz processor... it's not.

Second... check out my Athlon XP overclocking guide that I wrote up. It is not meant to be a step-by-step for a complete newbie. I wrote it to get people headed in the right direction because many don't know where to start or what to do if they don't seem to be able to reach their desired overclock. The guide is basically just the procedure I go through when overclocking a new CPU... if it helps you, great, but I take no responsibility if you screw anything up while following it. :)
