I need help *NOW* hooking up my uncle's dvd to his component thing

You know that thing that can display sound on those huge speakers etc.

The radio works fine, comes out perfect etc, all speakers working.

However, when we try playing a DVD, no sound comes out at all.

There are three options for the sound out which is like RL, FL, and then the center and sub.

Which one normally makes the sound from the DVD player go into the component thing.

okay your dvd can either be connected to teh receiver by:

1. TOS cable (optical or coaxial). If optical you got to take off the stub off the bck of the dvd player and connect the TOS optical cable to the TOS thing on the back of the receiver.

THe TOS coaxial is colored orange colored and is your digital out for sound. you can use that if you dotn have the fiberoptical cable. a standard coaxial cable will work fine for this..

The other option is connect teh standard L-R out on the dvd to the L-R in on the receiver. L-(White) i think and R(Red). HOwever you wont get DD5.1 or DTS .. you will only get stereo.

Make sure you go thru the "source input" to see if you did connect it to the wrong source input.

The sounds plays fine when I play the home entertainment box thing but when I switch it to the setting which I put the cables into, which is DVD/LD, no sound comes out.

you havent connected the output of the dvd to the receiver..

Most units will auto search for the input when it goes to DVD/LD.

Check your cables. If your using TOS Optical (fiber optic) check it. If your using a DIgital Coax (orange connector) then check that..

If your using L/R audio make sure that's in teh right source input.


Obviously the speakers are connected, cause the radio plays.. just check the cables between the dvd and the receiver. Also check to make sure the receiver if its seeing the tos/digital coax..

Most newer receivers will auto switch.. i know mine does.

Are you using an optical cable, or a single coax (basically a single RCA) cable for the digital sound connection from the DVD player to the receiver?

Also, can you give the make & model of the DVD player and the make and model of receiver to make things easier?

It's one of those generic DVD players and I'm using the connection I think called old school. The two red/white plugs connected from the DVD to the stereo.

You won't get dolby digital out of those.

Connect those to CD or to Mini Disc.. (not phono - its got the dynamic range limited there) or maybe even if its got cassette (if its got that option)..

Chances are the receiver isnt auto detecting the input. Mine will auto detect the input and will play from where ever the input of audio is coming from.
