I need help, my system went down HARD. I don't know what to do anymore.

Ok, this is what happened. I was at a LAN party installing a game. In the middle of the install my computer restarted. It got halfway into XP and said that a file named system was corrupt. Since it was a brand new install I reformatted and tried to install again. Nothing doing. Here's the odd thing. I made a 98 startup disk on this computer, it worked on that computer to give me the cd rom, once. After that it said there was a file missing and wouldn't give me access to the cd. I've gotten start up disks from other computers, sometimes they work once and sometimes they don't. This computer hasn't made one that works since the first one. I've tried installing on the few times it worked and it kept on saying files were copied incorrectly. This has happened on different discs of different OS's. I'm starting to think maybe my hard drive went out on me. I have another one I could try but does anybody have ANY clue what the hell is going on?

System specs are:
800 T'bird
Asus A7V
Seagate 20 gig hard drive
everything else I don't think should matter. The only thing that was changed recently was the addition of 256 megs of ram.

Try an fdisk...get it on your bootdisk...and then delete all your partitions...repartition and try again. Perhaps that might do something? Try scandisk too...and if all else fails...fdisk /MBR maybe that's causing you some problems...

Also, it appears to be your IDE channels themselves are screwing up...like your HD...your floppy isn't making proper boot floppies anymore...copying from the CD-ROM started all this...very slim chance but it could be your motherboard (I hope not)

Do you have your fsb overclocked? The reason I ask is that I screwed WinXP by overclocking too much.

Go into your bios and set your first boot device to CD ROM and boot to the WinXP cd. Then do a reformat and reinstall. If you need to save some of your files, take out your hd,set it as a slave, and put it in a buddies puter and copy all the files that you need saveed to his hd. You should be able to do this. Sounds like youe OS is screwed.
