I NEED HELP! - Memory?-want 2 buy today

I'm in the process of building my first system and I would like to OC eventually (fairly soon), and I can't decide on what memory to get. I've read tons of threads and google search results, etc., but I can't seem to get the answer specific to my situation, (maybe I'm looking in the wrong place). Anyways, I don't want to bore you with long thread, so these are my questions? I'm fairly set on getting Corsair memory in either 3500 or 3700.

I'm just not sure which ones to get. A lot of peolpe have sugested getting 2-4 single sticks 512 of XMS3500, but they don't say why. Alot of people have said to stay away from LL versions, but don't know why. Nobody has really said one way or another why to get or not get the TwinXMS versions. Also, nobody has really compared or explained to me, as to whether I should get the 3500 or 3700 versions.

I do a lot of graphic work and I like to play a lot of games. I'm probably going to get 2 gigs of ram - so I want to make sure and make the right choice. The system I would like to order today is below. Feel free to provide any input on the system as well. I have posted some similiar ?'s about individual parts, but know I've narrowed most everything except the memory. Thanks to all in advance.

Motherboard: ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe
Processor: Intel P4 2.8C 800-Retail
Case: Cooler Master Model# ATC-201B-BXT
Power Supply: Antec True480
Cooling: Thermalright SLK900U w/92mm Panaflo, also coolermaster thermal kit-w/Shin Etsu
RAM: Corsair XMS - 4 x 512MB PC-3700, or 4x 512 pc-3500 - TwinXMS or Single?
HD: 1x Raptors and 1X WDSE 250GB
DVD-RW: Sony DRU510A? - Really want a Blk drive
DVD/CDRW: Samsung SM-352BRNS-2mb blk oem
Floppy: Sony - blk
Video Card:ATI AIW 9800 Pro
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum
Keyboard/Mouse: Logitech MX Duo

I say - Corsair XMS PC3700 if doing 4 modules of 512 and have plenty of money. TwinX vs the single sticks really doesn't matter - just buy them all at once from the same place at whatever combo works out to be cheaper.

That being said, as an early user of Corsair XMS 512mb PC3200LL rev 1.1 stick on the P4P800 Deluxe, back when even corsair themselves weren't making good recommendations for the setup, I would just buy Kingston HyperX PC3500 512 mb sticks.

Jeez.. 2 gigs of RAM? Even if you do fairly intensive graphical work, how often do you go beyond 1 gig of RAM? Plus 4 sticks of RAM are much harder to o/c than just 2.

I think the hyperX will perform on par with the corsair. The only difference is Corsair's stuff is set a little too aggressively and you aren't likely to be able to run at the speeds they list as spd, while, with the HyperX, you'll probably get it to run at spd and you'll save some money at the same time.

Thanks ChefJoe - it's just so hard to make a decision on the memory. Even this sites review recommends Corsair XMS 3200LL memory as the fastest, and crucial as the most frugal. I'm highly considering just getting a gig of HyperX for now, and waiting a while before I add the second gig. I'm going to build another machine at the end of the year and I may swap or something later. Thanks again.

Borgman,

I woul personally grab some Hyper X 3500.... I have 2x512 Hyper X 3200 which does 220FSB 2/3/3/7..

Your hyper X would be rated at 217 FSb but most likely do 230+.

Cool choice on the 2 gigs of ram, you might need to relax timings a bit to get some solid overclocking...And remember to up your Vdimm (RAM voltage) because those sticks are going to be pulling some juice...

😀

Oh ya!

That reason not to jump on PC3700 is because its mainly overclocked 3500 with bad timings...

Your PC3500 could hit the same speeds if you relax timings a bit..

Good Luck to you..

Bryan.
