i just put togather my first system on my own...the system booted up fine...i got into bios settings...but didnt touch anything, i left all settings as default (my first time..so didnt wanna screw anything up)..

the cpu is running at 60c - 63c with the cooling system that came with the CPU.

i attemp to install windows
I put the floppy disk and boot up..and select "boot with Cd support"
then i make a MS dos partition and restart...then insert win 98 CD..and type "setup.exe"

its says press Enter to continue and Esc to cancel..so hit enter..and its says

"setup found a compressed volume or a disk-cache utility on your computer. Quit Setup and check your compressed volume with your disk compression software or remove the disk-cache utility. Then run setup.
If you have already done so, Press Esc to continue"

so i hit Esc to continue..and it freezes after saying

"Scanning system registry
window setup requires 73402..." .....and freezes

i dont know what i'm doing wrong..or is there bios setting that i need to setup.....

soemone please help me...my first time doing this

here are system specs:

Epox 8K3A+
XP 2100+
Samsung Pc 2700 - 256mb
WD 40Gigz
GF4 Ti 4200
Liteon 16x Dvd-Rom
2 sunon Fan (1 rear and 1 in the front)
Default cooling that came with XP 2100+ (although i have AX7 with L1A'...but i'll install that after i get windows running)

any help is appreciated ..thank you

I'm confused about the above.
You could have just booted off the 98 CD to start with, that probably would have been a lot smoother. Just make sure you can boot off of CD in the bios (you won't screw anything up changing the boot sequence, that's kids stuff). I'm not sure about that partition you've made though, but try booting off the CD anyways.

That's probably because the boot sequence in your bios isn't set to boot off of the CD first. Turn your computer on and keep hitting delete untill you get into the BIOS menu .. then browse around in there until you find the boot sequence .. it might not be called that though, but somewhere you can specify which devices you want to boot off of in what order. I usually set mine to boot A: CDrom C: .. so floppy, cdrom, C: .. so if there is no floppy or cd in the drives then it boots off the hard drive .. but if I want to boot off of a CD I just put it in and it goes. So go change your boot sequence and then try booting off the CD again.

ok..i found the option to change the boot sequence, and i changed it to "boot from CD" ....and tried with both windows 98 and windows ME..and i get "missing operating system"

how do i boot from the HD?

do you think that partition is causing the system to be unable to boot from Cd..
i'll try deleting the partition and retry boot from CD

No the partition shouldn't matter .... you sure you got your CD drive hooked up right? Slave/master and everything is okay .. do you see it on the post screen when you turn your computer on? That black screen, the first one that comes on after you power up, usually the machine will look for your devices .. like primary master, primary slave, secondary master, secondary slave .. that sort of thing .. next to one of those you should see your CDrom model number or something which would indicate that the BIOS can see the drive and that it'll probably work. If the drive isn't hooked up properly or is not being noticed by the bios then you wont' be able to boot off of it.

no luck..

So it still won't boot from the CD? Is this an original 98 CD or a copy? If it's a copy it might not be a bootable disc and that might also be your problem. In that case booting off the floppy with CDrom support enabled should do the trick .. once it boots type "setup" and you shouldn't even have to cd out of a:

does the bios see your CDrom drive?

i think the HD is causing the problem, because once i try run "setup" ...it skips the scandisk part..and goes back to "E:/" promt (my cdrom drive)....

Try this sequence:
Boot from the floppy, with CD support
format c: /q
C:
MD win98
CD win98
E:
CD win98
copy . c:
... this will copy the windows distribution to your C: drive
c:
setup

If your CD-ROM drive and CD are OK, the copy will succeed. The penalty is the 120MB of hard disk space consumed by the windows distribution. The benefit is that when you make changes you will not need to "insert the Windows CD-ROM and press enter"🙂

If the copy failed, you know there is something wrong with the CD or CD-ROM drive.

Be sure to install SmartDrv.exe (in Win98 directory in CD-ROM)! Otherwise, it will take a while 🙂

ok..i tried booting staright from the windows 98 CD...but it says "Operating System missing"

Just FYI, the retail versions of Win98se and WinME aren't bootable, AFAIK. (Some OEM versions are though. I only have copies of the retail ones, so I can't test if the OEM ones are bootable or not, but I've heard that they may be.) I do know that the retail Windows 2000 disc is bootable though.
