I need help in finding topographic maping software

I need in finding some good topographic maping software. Any recommendations?

I just bought Topo USA 4.0 on DVD but am having troubles trying to get it to actually show me a map, either 2D or 3D, I'd be happy with either. It's supposed to show 3D topo maps and elevation profiles between two points but I'm just baffled.

Grrrr.

Anyone out there used this one?
