I went I downloaded nero 7 ultra or what ever. Went to install it and then realized I didnt have the space. Then I deleted the download. But low and behold the files it extracted must be hidden somewhere. or the installer reserved 1gig or something. I dont know. But if someone could help me recover this space id be happy :)

1) Clear the recycle bin

2) Do a search by date - make sure that you enable all files including hidden & system

3) Remove those that fall within your problem critera time span

Repeat Step #1.

And why are you worrying about 1 GB of space unless you have a very old system?

A whole bunch of dir's came up because I have been cleaning up space and checking alot of places to check for the files. What are the windows prefetch and windows software distribuition download folders. they look like possible culprits. Im worried about 1 gig cause my laptop has almost no free space avaialble. 40 gig drive filled to the max.

If you know the date of intallation, then filter your search by those dates

Anything in the Temp or Windows/Temp directorys is scratch and could be considered fair game

Most anything that has an extension .tmp can also be removed.

Look in -
C:\WINDOWS\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name)\Local Settings\Temp
or even
C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name)\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

May want delete your temporary internet files.
If you right click your drive icon in MY Computer you should see a disk cleanup button. That is if you are running XP. That would be a good place to start to free up some room on your drive. If you are realy cramped for space you may want to turn off system restore.
