I''ve been playing the guitar now for 6 years and learning a few Nick Drake tunes has inspired me to be able to play and sing at the same time... First off I don't even know if I know how to sing :p. I am usually to embarrassed to sing. Should I start of with just humming? I can barely hum when just strumming chords, I don't know how to do it when playing something intricate like Nick Drake.

Makes me respect Geddy Lee even more!

Ugh... the problem is that the stuff I want to be able to sing to is complex :(... I guess it will be like learning how to play the guitar all over
again... one of the song I was to do is called River Man by Nick Drake and it's in 5/4 time which is tricky enough on the guitar as it is!

ohtwell - Send me a recording an let me be the judge :p

You aren't thinking of playing live are ya???

Record 2 separate tracks.

Other than that, it's just like patting your head and rubbing your belly. It just takes practice.

Hell no! I can barely play the guitar in front of people! I just want to be able to do it... who knows maybe my shell will crumble and I will
perform in front of people :) (although it's a thick shell to crack :p)

Ha Ha Ha .........lol

That reminds me of my highschool days when a guy I knew made a tape of his one man band............... he would play various instruments (drums, sax, trumpet, guitar, piano, harmonica etc) and sing all on different tracks........... then combine them:) It actually sounded pretty good :D

Cheers,

I remember you saying you didn't play in front of people, so that's why I suggested the 2 tracks deal. But if you still want to do it, then yeah... practice. It's sort of like drumming really. Gotta keep track and time of a few things at once.

Hehe, I've already done that... I got a few tunes where I have triple tracked myself... usually 2 guitar tracks and a bass line.

silverpig - Stop talking about it like it comes easy to you :p It's bad enough that I have to coordinate two hands to do two different things :p

Yeah, that'd work, but with cakewalk, you can record them all to your computer...

wait a second...you've been playing for 6 years and can barely play in front of people? somehow that bothers me. i've only been playing off and on for 2 and i still find time to play with/for others.

as far as the singing/playing at the same time...easiest way to learn is to find songs where words you are supposed to sing are simultaneous with the notes you are supposed to play.

Yup, but I will gladly record the tracks into the computer and put em on the net :p

Joey - Nick Drake
Classic Gas - Mason Williams

Put me in front of a crowd and the mistakes multiply 10 fold.

Practise with a tune from Tenacious D.................. if you can sing anything Jack Black & Kyle Gass play then you should be able to sing & play anything :)

Cheers,
Aquaman <<<<<<<<, love him the acoustic guitar :D

Haha, it doesn't come easy to me at all. Add that to the fact that I can't sing worth sh!t, and I'm a mess :)

I've been playing on and off for about 4-5 years now, and I'm just starting to play with other people (got a little thing set up with a guy who's played with Chad from Nickelback :) )

I can barely play guitar, if you can call it playing, but it would be easier to sing while playing bass than guitar in most instances.

I am not a big Nickelback fan... I am going to Badly Drawn Boy in November though :D

Pacfanweb - Not if you are playing Rush bass lines :)

I am thinking that I should just get all the tabs for the Nirvana unplugged CD and start from there...

I used to be a huge NB fan. That was back in the day though. Not so big on them anymore, but I do still like their older stuff.

54-40 is always a good show; really nice guys too.

Maybe try playing Give a Little Bit by Supertramp. It's pretty easy.

i think a lot of it comes sorta naturally... i can sing and play at the same time on almost anything as long as it isn't some insanely odd guitar part.... sure doing both definetely takes away from your singing (not as good as it could be by it self) and the guitar playing, but eventually you can get to the point where it's presentable...

Woohoo! Go Canucks Go!

I had to put the guitar down since I got a horrible cough and it is driving me crazy...

fooshkee - Yeah, I did some reading on some newsgroups and it seems like it comes naturally to most people.

Fedorov had 2 goals tonight. It's gonna be an awesome year if he keeps up this level of production. Add that to #2 and #3 scorers Naslund and Bertuzzi last year... ohhhhh man... :)

Oh, back to the guitar... um yeah... it has strings... yeah.
