I NEED HELP!! good hardware/horrible FPS

Please, anyone, your help would be greatly appreciated.

I just finished putting together a computer, here are its stats:
-Asus k8v deluxe motherboard, AMD64 3400+ processor, ATI radeon 9600se, 1.5 gigs of memory (2 kingston hyperx 512's (pc3200) and another 512mb, using onboard sound, and PCI wirelss G.

I installed Medal of Honor- Pacific Assault and the gameplay was extremely slow when the graphics or resolution was turned up. If I jolt my mouse one direction, it will take the computer 1 second to respond and repeat the action on the screen. It is only playable on 640x480, and even then it is not as fast as it should be. Call of Duty Multiplayer, for some reason, works fine. It runs smoothly and responds instantly when i move my mouse.
So today I downloaded 3DMark05 today and my computer was giving a horrible preformance. I let it get though 4 scenes and each one averaged ABOUT 2-3 FPS!!!! I couldn't take anymore so I quit the program and came to this website, in hopes that one of you hardware guru's can give me some advice.
It just seems like my computer should be a lot better than it is preforming. Besides the radeon9600, which is a generation or two behind the times, I've got some pretty good hardware, don't I?
Oh, and another thing that is weird about my video card/drivers, in display properties -> settings, the screen resolution can only go to 1280 by 1024, which I thought was kind of low.

I hope you can help me,
-Alex P

A 9600SE is a pretty slow card. It's bottom of the barrel these days, in fact.

Mainly because it only has 64bit memory.

In fact, I wish I could slap you through the computer for putting that card in that computer. 😀

One check you can make though is to see what DXDIAG says under the display tab.

I'd say if the game starts up you're doing good with that VC.
If you an FX-55 OC'ed with 4 gig or RAM, it wouldn't play any better. Buy a new VC.

go for a 6600GT...i hear they are about 183 at BB B&M...some sorta special or something...i have a 9800pro and that is rock solid in everything....but the 6600GT is better price and better performance...and hey...if you have the money....the skys the limit....

Thanks for responding. Yeah, I knew the 9600 was pretty bad, but I had no idea it was THAT bad, I mean 3 frames per second is insanely bad. Alright, It's time to upgrade the video card, then. Do you think that the x800 pro is worth the extra cost over the 9800 pro?

What resolutions do you run at? What details do you expect? IMO, if you're buying a card in the $200 range or higher right now, NVidia is a better choice. If you don't need 16x12 with all the AF and AA, get a 6600GT (make sure it's AGP) for about $220. If you do, or are interested in the extra headroom, get a 6800GT for $388.

Also, I was looking at x800's on newegg, and I saw that there was a number of different manufacturers, including visiontek, sapphire, asus, abit, and msi, as well as the regular ATI. Should I avoid any of these? or is one known for being good quality? Should I get an asus to go with my asus motherboard?
Thanks for the help

I believe Sapphire is a good manufacturer of ATI cards. You don't need to match your mobo or anything; just get the cheapest one with the features you need (if there's any differentiation, or if one overclocks better than another) from a good brand. If you go NVidia, consider eVGA and BFG.

NVidia, really? Didn't the ati x800 get a better gaming benchmark than the nvidia of equal cost?

The X800XL (MSRP $300, but is still vaporware and probably won't reach that price for a while after it's available; it's also PCIe only) will give the 6800GT a run for its money on PCIe after prices stabilize, but currently the consensus seems to be that NV is the leader at $200 and over. You can look at benchmarks and decide for yourself.

Right now, NVidia is coming out on top in most benchmarks for the high end cards. I have always owned ATI (always), but I bought a 6800 GT this time. Just performs better IMO.

Alright, thanks a lot man. I'm pretty sure my motherboard can't run PCIe anyways, so maybe I will finally make the switch from ATI to NVidia.

I recommend a 6800GT (GT= good times lol!) most ppl have been extremely happy with them. (most 6600GT except for bad ones, so be RMA prepared)

6800GT is a bit pricey compared to what you have now. 400 bucks vs. 70 bucks? If you don't wanna invest TOO much the 6600GT is a great card, and is about half the cost of a 6800GT.

Don't forget to defrag after installing everything on a new computer. Fragmentation can kill performance in games.

I agree. If you don't need to play at the absolute highest levels of detail, then you can't beat a 6000 GT. I went with the 6800 GT only beacuse I've always bought medium level VC's, and I wanted to go all out this time. My wife's not happy, but I sure am.🙂

Did anyone mention that your video card is sadly sub-par with the rest of that setup? 😛

There isn't a CPU/MoBo/RAM combo that could possibly make that thing give you a decent gaming experience.

If you want to see 3DMark05 run smoothly, you will need DX9 features. (TOL ATI or NVidia)
