😱 Ok here it goes, Now please keep in mind, I know nothing about computers, so bare with me.

I have an old Monorail 400mhz with 32 megs. I installed 128 megs(the man at best buy said for me to remove the old memory and install the new one in its place, since my puter would not recognize it because it would have more memory than my comouter can take) and a tv tuner card, turned the puter on and everything worked fine, turned it off and took it down to our warehouse to use there and I kept getting explorer has caused an error, and it wouldnt go any further, so I went in and restore the registry and still nothing. Turned it off and then it wouldnt even goto the windows prog, (so I added the old memory back in the original slot and put the new memory in the other slot)so I put hte system disk in and all I could get was view, scan disk, partition or format, so I scanned the disk, and nothing and continued with everything until I got mad and formated and lost everything, not that anything was working anyways. Now Is there some way to get it back up?? System disk is doing nothing but giving me the same options.
Please tell me how bad did I screw it up and can I fix it or should I take it to some one to have it fixed?

Told you I need help from some who doesnt get annoyed easy. 😀

Thanks in advance for all your help. I know if anyone can help you guys can.

so you formatted the disk
and now when you turn the computer on you're not getting anything at all?

Update: ok, I'm heading to bed so here's what I recommend. It sounds like you have a bad stick of RAM so you should return it and get a new one. However, that's not going to solve the problems you've created. What you're gonna have to do is reinstall Windows and the drivers for your hardware. If you don't know how to do that than you should probably take it to a local computer shop and have them do it. They'll probably install the RAM for you for little charge or no charge.
By formatting the hard drive you completely erased everything. There are ways of getting it back but from what I've read their rather lengthy and complicated. Would be best to take it to the local computer shop.

When I turn it on it says insert system disk, when I do that it goes back to view, scan disk, partition and format. I will try to get it to take the windows cd.

IF anyone else has any info to offer Please do so or email me.

Thanks 🙂

From the way your describing the boot disk you have, it's not a system boot disk but a recovery or troubleshooting disk. A system disk will ask you if you want to start with cdrom support or without cdrom support. You're gonna need cdrom support to get the windows cd to load. Your memory may not be bad just too big. Depending on what chipset was used to make your motherboard and the bios revision you may be only able to take 64MB memory moduals. If you have the manual it will say in there.

o boy...

yeah, your boot disk sounds more like a diagnotic disk.
with a proper windows boot disk you should be able to get to a command prompt.

you definitely have to reinstall windows.

as for your original problem, if you had no trouble with your old ram, and only with the new, it could be bad ram... or if you never had trouble wiht the new ram untill you moved it to the warehouse, make sure nothing came a *tiny teeny bit* loose, computers can be picky. and make sure you have a good surge protector, because i assume the power in the warehouse will have a few more spikes etc...

inconsistent power can cause a lot of crashes/errors...

🙁Now that you have formatted your hard disk, you need to create a primary partition, when you get the message"partiton and format" choose yes, go to the list choose 1 create a primary partiton, if it comes up that you cannot, then go to option 4 to wiew the current drv con fig, logical, extended, etc. These must be deleted befor you can reformat for a primary partition .after creating the primary( which will give you the option of creating more than a single drive, depending on how large of drv you have)reboot, ask a friend if they have a windows oem boot disk for a new computer, this has the dos files need to load win. john

john,
If she just formatted the computer she's not going to have to make new partitions, they'll still be there. She didn't say anything about using fdisk, just format.

I still think you should take it to a pro and have him reinstall Windows. Having to reinstall Windows isn't as simple as clicking a button and it installs itself. Unless, of course, you have a Windows CD that was made for you computer so it has all your component drivers on there.

The disk I have is a recovery disk for my system. I also have the windows 98 cd that came with my computer, (I will have to find it) So IF I just put the windows cd in the computer it should start reading off of it? Correct?
IF not then after I put the windows cd in what do I need to do.

Also I had 32 megs of ram my book said it would hold up to 128, so now I bought a 128 and removed the 32 that was in there asI described above. Do I need to leave both the 32 and 128 in there or should I take out the 32 (or will this even make a difference)

"Boy I screwed this puter up" 😱

I just went out and bought a HP computer the other day , I tried to use the startup disk I got with it(since it has windows and everything on it)
but it said it could only be used for a HP computer, anyway to bypass this?

You are all so Patient
😀

If I make a boot disk off my new computer can I use it??

If the OS is the same, Win98, on your new pc, you will be able to make a boot disk and use it.
As you only formatted, you dont need to repartition.

Once you have the bootdisk (I am assuming that you know where and how to make the bootdisk, if not go to control panel - add/remove - startup disk and make the disk, you can also download one from www.bootdisk.com )

Ok, the next thing you have to do, is put the floppy in and start your pc, as long as your boot sequence is set correctly you will be fine.
Once it starts reading the floppy it will give you a menu, asking if you want to have cdrom support or not. For starters select no cdrom support, then when you get the dos prompt type in format C:/s
This will just ensure that your drive is indeed clean and it will copy over the system files.
You will be prompted for a volume label, just press enter through that until you are back at the dos prompt. Then restart, this time select 'with CDROM support".
During this process it will load CDROM drivers and tell you the drive letter of your CDROM.
When it has finished Type the drive and a colon, for example if you cdrom has been given the drive letter E - type E: then hit the enter key, that will take you to the CDROM drive that has your Windows cd.
Then type setup and hit enter, from there its pretty straight forward.
It will scan your disks to check for errors and you just hit x to back out and then the windows installation process will begin.

If you have to take it to a pro to get it fixed, you should atleast have a go yourself first.
Just incase you get lost.

😉 Thanks everyone I am going to try all this in the morning when I go to the warehouse. I will let ya'll know if it works.
Thanks Again
Laura😀
