Ok heres the problem, my dad has this really old computer, we are talking 5-6 years old that he refuses to upgrade. Its a pentium 2 400 mhz, with 64 mbs of ram. He is running windows xp on it (by some miracle) and has been for the last year or so. This morning when he turned it on everything loaded fine, but the mouse would not move so I plugged in a different mouse, which would not work (would it be because it is an optical mouse?). Is this a problem being caused by just the mouse or is it something else?

If it's PS2, shut down, plug mouse in, and reboot PC. Even today, I don't think all PS2 devices are hot-swappable on modern boards.

If a spare mouse is not optical, also try dedusting that mouse ;) In any case, yes, try a spare or buy a free one next time such a deal comes along.

Don't hot swap a PS2 device!!! If you killed the port try a USB mouse.R
