I just spent an hour searching through periodicals in the library and another 45 minutes combing Google. I need to find an article with a non-American point of view written prior to 2000 about the Vietnam War. Anyone have any ideas on how to find one?

Are you looking for a Vietnamese view or just any view?

Have you tried the BBC site yet?

Any non-American view. I briefly viewed the BBC but I was having troubles finding archived articles.

Long, Ngô. "Vietnamese Perspectives." Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War. New York: Scribner Book Company, 1995.

I remember using that for a research paper. I found it somewhat useful.

Thanks, the library here doesn't have that, but I might try and stop by the county library before work and check it out.

Try Korean opinion. What a shame the Americans gave up to the communists in Vietnam. I bet Koreans feel real lucky about that.

That would imply I could find the librarian:p It's a small community college library and I couldn't find her.

I'm sure the So Viets are pissed at the hippies and John Lennons of the world who were against their freedoms. I am saying South Koreans probably feel lucky that the US didn't pull out early when times were bad.

Let me take a guess of the summary of the NGC view in three words: unjust imperialist war?

Summary (fair warning, I got too angry after 2 hours and change to finish it)
Soldier's on front line: We're winning the war
Media: We're losing the war
President: Hey let's stop fighting the war

Well for one its not the Vietnam war but the American war if you are in vietnam.

And we still be there to this day if we had not pulled out. The PEOPLE that were in the north that did not want us there would have kept fighting until we either left or there was not anybody left. To them its THEIR country and we were outsiders.

We would kill 10 to our 1 and they still come back over and over agin. Did not matter if they had to give kids and women weapons as they would and did.

How do you know? How did South Korea get preserved? You only believe in freedom for yourself but not for others?

I know as my wife and her family is from vietnam and he, my father in law, was in the gov. of the south and helped the us in the war. He also spent 10 years in jail after we left. I had 3 high ranking south vietnamese military people at my wedding that worked with my father in law as well. So I think my info might just be a tad more based on first hand fact then your "i watched a show about...".

And Korea worked as the north was happy being split. In vietnam that was not the case. hence the reason they used the laos trail to attack the south with out being seen.
Also south Korea does not have any other real countries touching it. For the north to attack they had only 2 fronts, their own land into the south and water. Both of which were easy to defend against. Vietnam did not have that luxery as the North came through Laos very easy and used tunnels as well.
Same problem we are having in Iraq is there are to many areas to cover and keep new weapons and supplies out. They can keep fighting as long as people give them food and weapons to fight with.

This thread got sour fairly quickly:D. Just got back from talking with the librarian, and he wasn't much help. Showed me how to search a newspaper database, but it only goes back to mid 90's for most papers:p I'm currently searching through some journals hoping to get luck and find one. Any other feedback would be appreciated.

Speaking of the Vietnam war, today is the 40th anniversary of my dad getting his 3rd purple heart - the one that sent him home. Almost lasted a full year in country (some 20 days short).
