ok, my friend comes over with his computer. When he boots up, the os loads and he goes into the desktop. But then all of a sudden the computer reboots automatically and then windows loads but doesnt make it to the desktop. Right after the windows startup screen, a flash of blue appears with words. instantaneously, it reboots, the process is repeated over and over and over. WTH do we do????

I have win2k
Matrox G400
onboard sound
epox 8kha+
athlon xp 1500(non overclocked)
intel NIC

sounds like drivers compatibility issue..
try to install only the most basic drivers.....and work from there.

Well, number one you need to get into Windows. Try and go into safe mode first.

You need to give a little bit more info.

What OS is he running? Has he installed anything new, etc.

Someone posted about exactly the same problem in here a few days ago. I can't remember the name of the thread, but it had something to do with removing stuff from Start Up. Wish I could remember the title of the thread. Maybe someone else reading this will.

It was a thread about silly or embarassing things people have done when first fooling around with computers.

well dont' repair AND go to safemode.. if you do that, then you won't know if it was safemode, or if it was the repairs... do one at a time

Sounds like a video driver issue perhaps. When you go into safe mode, unistall your drivers and use regular VGA drivers. Then see if its possible to get into Windows.
Good luck!

well, you have set your PC to automatically reboot on error.

right click on My COmputer >> properties >> advanced >> Startup and Recovery and uncheck reboot on error.

Also, in safe mode, go to event viewer and tell us what errors you are getting.

Take his hard drive out of his computer. Put it as a slave drive in yours. Transfer necessary files to your HD. Format his. Done and done.

remove all non essential hardware and as much ram as you can. Keep adding in hardware until the error occurs, then you know your problem. My girlfriends 3com 509 NIC caused the same problem. I might be your video card, then you will have to replace it with another, delete the old drivers, reinstall your card, then reboot and win2k will reinstall the drivers
