I need health insurance.

Apparently I need to send proof of insurance to start medical school.

After graduating undergrad, I joined the 50 million uninsured masses. Now I need to get myself covered. I am young, healthy, good medical background and a nonsmoker.

Unfortunately my school doesn't offer any programs and it is very unlikely I will be able to even think about employment.

So I am looking for some suggestions. I am sure there are some folks on here that needed inexpensive insurance whilst in grad school. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ATOT.

Is there some sort of professional organization you could join (cheap student membership) that offers insurance?

Any chance for at least some extension time from your parents' current plans? (i.e. hit up cobra?)

I think I am making a new rule that you have to call me instead of posting in my threads. I am sick of you edits 15 minutes later when you realize it is me.

Already looked that route. Now that I am 23 I am sol.

Depending on the state you live in, you can qualify to be on your parent's insurance until you are 24/25/26. If you were dropped from your parents insurance because you no longer qualify as a dependent, you are eligible for COBRA for up to 36 months (the price will likely kill your budget).

Yeah that was my point, you might be able to sneak in on COBRA for a bit longer as you're still a student. Oh, and this is easier than picking up my phone.

Call health insurance companies of your choosing.
Purchase said insurance.
Done.

Why is this so difficult?

Why is this so difficult?

That would be expensive, often there are better options for students.

So why is OP making it so difficult? Sorry for being an ass, but why is this so difficult to understand?

1) actually care about your health and insurance
2) call, provide you scenario - you're a student so you're a special snowflake
3) profit?

I was in SirSteve0's position, I picked up health insurance for 50 bucks a month. Pick up the phone, call, and shop for your insurance.

I am trying to locate any deals or great programs I can jump into. You just picked on and went with it. I am sure with some wheeling and dealing and a little more information, you could have gotten a better deal.

Just calling up and asking they aren't going to go out of their way to make it cheap for you. They are going to try to convince you why their is the best at a certain price and then try to sell you extras.
I want a good, basic, inexpensive student insurance. I am sure someone on ATOT has gotten a great deal and would be willing to pass on the info.

50 a month? No offense, but what kinda POS insurance was that?

if you are in one of the lucky 6 states (or your parents?)..I held onto my GA policy a few months after I had moved out..

https://www.tonik.com/

$81 a month including dental..not a bad deal..i calculated that with my ER visit for a messed up shoulder and one dental visit, I got exactly equal amt of benefits as I paid in premiums (plus they reduced the cost by using negotiated rates)

OP and select posters don't know much about health insurance. You can get decent to good insurance as a student for 50-150 bucks a month. Good luck with that "wheeling and dealing." Make sure you learn how to take advice or your next 10 years will be painful.

No, student health insurance doesnt cover much, and it isnt that cheap.

His best bet is to get regular health insurance and payfor it with student loans.

The kind that single healthy people can get.

A single healthy person can get decent insurance for $60-70, good insurance for $70-100, great insurance for $100-175, and more than they would ever use at $175+.

OP here and no offense, but what the fuck are you talking about?

I am sure there are plenty of deals out there and anandtech is a great place to get advice on them. Hence my thread.

So far there have been a good amount of decent leads as well as personal accounts that will definitely help. Calling people who's only goal is to get me to buy their product is nothing compared to this.. If I didn't want advice, I wouldn't ask.

All you need is to cover emergency/big stuff and then just pay for office visits if you get sick or go to the school doc-in-a-box.

Health insurance is exactly like car insurance. You shop around and find what works best for you at the price you want to pay.

That looks cool, I might end up signing up for that in a month and a half when my free COBRA coverage ends.

After I graduated I got in to some low cost plan from Fortis while I was still in a college internship....or just go to ehealthsurance and compare the local providers. After my internship was over and I shopped and purchased Humana for a few years at around $120/month. It was a typical PPO, with a moderately high deductible and Out-of-pocket-maximum...but the coverage was good.
