i was wondering for 150-200 $ what is the best dual core cpu that i can get. also i would need a mobo for this new dual core as well i am willing to pay up 300 for that. along with that i need a geforce 8600 from somwhere. where can i get the 8600 graphics card for a good price?

0ne more question. when they say 1.6 ghz dual core do they mean thats what each cpu is running at or is that what the both run at combined???

How about $150-200 for the mobo and up to $300 for the CPU, not the other way around?

You really need to reconsider your budget, man, get some good motherboard that uses the P35 chipset, whatever Core 2 Duo you want, and spend the rest of the money on a GeForce 8800GTS, 640MB if you can but the 320MB is fine.

1.6GHz is the speed of each core. That's not to say that it's 3.2GHz effectively, it's just like a 1.6GHz chip that can multitask really well. That is to say, in single-threaded applications (programs that can only use 1 core), it will perform like a 1.6GHz chip.

I would go with a Gigabyte P35 mobo, and perhaps the C2D E6600 CPU. Currently that will set you back around $350 or so. Though it might be wise to just wait another month and see how the prices drop on/after July 22nd for the CPUs.

Like f4phantom2500 said, try and aim for an 8800GTS.

what about the asus p5k ? no need for some deluxe stuff that he's probably not gonna use anyways. And yeah, get a e6420 or e6600, and a GOOD videocard, if gaming is your thing, if it isn't, then just buy some 'older' dx9 card like a 7600gt for 100$, or a cheap ati x2600 for HD stuff.

Wait a month or two if you can. I keep hearing the release of the new line will drop prices across the board.

Newegg has a biostar 945g board with the e4300 dual core retail boxed for only $187 plus shipping. It has built in video, or you can use a separate pci-e card.

For someone on a budget, it's not a bad combo. He'll still have to buy a video card, and maybe upgrade the power supply, which leaves him little money for a fancy motherboard.
