Alright...

I wasn't sure where to put this, but I thought that the CPU forum felt natural for this subject. What's this all about? It's simple. I'm doing a little project, and I would like to know what are the best estimations (or if it all possible the exact model) of the Desktop CPU equivalent(s) in comparisons for the following Consoles:

1) Sega Saturn
2) Sony PlayStation
3) Nintendo 64
4) Sega Dreamcast
5) Sony PlayStation 2
6) Nintendo GameCube
7) Microsoft XBOX
8) Microsoft XBOX 360
9) Sony PlayStation 3
10) Nintendo Wii

The rules are simple:

A) The equivalents can only be that indeed, equivalents, which means that I'm primarily looking for estimation(s).
B) There can be more than one CPU equivalent mentioned, but only one is preferred.
C) If the Console's CPU architecture is so "different" than any Desktop CPU of its respective time and as a result cannot be compared to anything then please just leave a comment indicating so.

I am aware that many persons will give different equivalents/comparisons, so I will wait until a couple of replies are posted before making my mind and using the given information.

Thanks for your time and participation.

You can find the exact specs of the processors pretty easily if that would help you (wikipedia.) As for "desktop equivalents" it depends on the OS and the environment it's being used it. Desktops always have better processors available but they usually run higher resolutions + OS + firewalls, etc.

Since the consoles you list are designed more for graphics performance than for pedestrian general purpose computing, a better question would be to ask for the GPU (not CPU) equivalents, or for both GPU and CPU equivalents.

I can at least start you on the easy ones...
7) Was a Pentium III/733 with a nVidia GeForce 3 class video processor. The original Xbox was cheap to make because most of its guts were midrange PC components at the time.

8 & 9 were custom designs by IBM that were way ahead of their time compared to PCs on the market. They're 3-core CPUs which also perform the GPU functions.

10) The main CPU is a 750 MHz PowerPC, as in Apple's former PowerMacs. The GPU is made my ATI... it's fairly weak compared to contemporary products, but I don't know what to compare it to.

Thanks, that's a nice start.

I'm asking all this because my project will talk about how the CPU technology (specifically) evolved in the video gaming market, for Consoles, in comparison to the PC CPU's (Desktop) starting from the Sega Saturn. So if at all possible I do need comparisons. That's the tricky part I certainly guessed it. It was much easier to come up with the GPU equivalents, but that part is done already, I really only am looking for the CPU equivalents.

I think the hardest part is a lot of the older consoles were only designed to do one thing so they could be very embedded like cpus so it is hard to say what x86 cpu would be is equivalent.

1) Dual SuperH-2 32-bit CPUs (50MIPS) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_saturn ~ ?
2) MIPS R3000A 32-bit (30MIPS) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation ~ ?
3) MIPS R4300i 64-bit (most games used 32-bit) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_64 ~?
4) SH-4 RISC CPU 32-bit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast ~ p3
5) Emotion Engine 32-bit(?) (MIPS R3/R4) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_PlayStation_2 ~p3
6) IBM "Gekko" PowerPC 32-bit CPU http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_GameCube ~p3
7) Intel 32-bit Coppermine Celeron http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_XBOX ~p3
8) TripleCore IBM PowerPC 64-bit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Xbox_360 ~core
9) Cell BE (1PowerPC + 7 SPE) 64-bit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_PlayStation_3 ~core
10) PowerPC-based "Broadway" (32-bit?) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Wii ~p3
